On June 23, 1757, the British East India Company defeated the Nawab of Bengal at Plassey. The victory marked the company’s shift from a trading business to a territorial power, helping it gain leverage over Bengal’s taxes, markets, and exports. This helped set up large-scale transfers of revenue and goods from South Asia into British-linked trade and finance.
The Treaty of Paris, signed February 10, 1763, ended the Seven Years’ War and reorganized colonial possessions among European powers. Britain expanded its overseas position, which strengthened its access to Atlantic and Asian trade routes and commodities. These imperial advantages fed Europe’s growing industrial and commercial economy.
In 1765, the Mughal emperor granted the East India Company the diwani (land-revenue collection rights) for Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. This turned tax collection into a key mechanism for moving wealth out of India through company remittances, purchases, and payments to Britain. Revenue extraction also increased the company’s ability to fund expansion and secure trade privileges.
In August 1791, enslaved people in the French colony of Saint-Domingue launched a large uprising that became the Haitian Revolution. The revolt threatened one of the world’s most profitable plantation economies, built on forced labor and exports of sugar and coffee to Europe. It showed that extraction based on slavery could face powerful resistance, reshaping debates about slavery, empire, and trade.
On January 1, 1804, Haiti declared independence, ending a long war against European efforts to restore colonial control. Independence disrupted European access to plantation output from the former colony and influenced the wider Atlantic economy. The event also increased pressure on European states to confront the contradictions between profit, coercion, and political rights.
The UK’s Slave Trade Act received royal assent on March 25, 1807, and took effect on May 1, 1807, banning the slave trade in the British Empire. This changed how Britain policed ocean commerce, even while plantation economies and coerced labor systems remained central to global commodity supply. Ending the legal trade was a major shift in the rules of imperial commerce, but it did not end exploitation in colonial economies.
In 1808, Britain formed the West Africa Squadron to suppress the transatlantic slave trade by patrolling the West African coast. Enforcement became part of Britain’s strategy for shaping global trade on its terms, while also reflecting abolitionist politics at home. The squadron’s effectiveness and motives have been debated, but it signaled a growing state role in regulating oceanic commerce.
The Slavery Abolition Act received royal assent on August 28, 1833, and took effect on August 1, 1834. It abolished slavery in most British colonies while compensating enslavers, linking emancipation to imperial finance rather than restitution for the enslaved. This transition reshaped colonial labor systems, as plantation owners and colonial governments sought new ways to control labor and maintain commodity exports to Europe.
In 1846, Britain repealed the Corn Laws, reducing protection for domestic grain and strengthening a political shift toward freer trade. Cheaper food was expected to support industrial growth by lowering living costs and wages pressures. This move also increased demand for imported commodities from abroad, including from colonies and other dependent regions tied to Europe’s trading system.
On August 2, 1858, Britain passed the Government of India Act, moving authority from the East India Company to the British Crown after the 1857 rebellion. The change tightened state control over taxation, infrastructure, and trade policy in India. It also connected India’s resources and markets more directly to British strategic and industrial needs.
The Suez Canal opened to navigation on November 17, 1869, creating a much shorter route between Europe and the Indian Ocean. This lowered travel time and shipping costs for goods moving between European ports and Asian and African regions. Faster transport strengthened Europe’s ability to direct long-distance trade, move troops, and integrate colonial extraction into industrial supply chains.
From November 15, 1884 to February 26, 1885, European powers met in Berlin to coordinate competing claims in Africa. The conference’s General Act promoted “effective occupation” as a standard for recognition and accelerated the Scramble for Africa. This helped European states secure territory more quickly, expanding access to raw materials and labor for export to Europe.
In 1885, the Congo Free State emerged as a vast territory under the personal rule of Belgium’s King Leopold II. The state developed an extractive system focused on commodities such as ivory and rubber, with coercion and violence widely reported. Profits and resources flowed outward through European companies and financial networks, illustrating how colonial control could be organized around export extraction.
In 1904, activists including E.D. Morel helped form the Congo Reform Association to expose abuses in the Congo Free State. The group used journalism, public meetings, and photographs to pressure governments and investors. This was an early example of transnational activism challenging an extractive colonial economy by targeting its legitimacy and political backing.
On November 15, 1908, Belgium annexed the Congo Free State, ending Leopold II’s personal rule and creating the Belgian Congo. The annexation followed international outrage over exploitation and violence linked to rubber and other extraction. While colonial extraction continued, control shifted to the Belgian state, showing how European governments sometimes reorganized empire to manage scandal and protect resource flows.
In 1914, the outbreak of World War I disrupted global shipping, finance, and the ability of European empires to manage long-distance trade as before. Wartime demands redirected raw materials and intensified state control over economies. The war marked a turning point that closed the 1750–1914 era of expanding colonial extraction feeding Europe’s industrial rise in its prewar form.
