Baseline year for long-run comparisons
Labels: 1980 baseline, World InequalityIn 1980, researchers often mark the start of today’s “globalization era” for comparing inequality across time. However, widely used global wealth share series for the world’s top 1% are not consistently available back to 1980; the World Inequality Database (WID) emphasizes that global wealth data are scarce and its global wealth series start in the mid-1990s. This creates a measurement gap between the desired 1980 baseline and what can be reliably tracked worldwide for wealth shares.
