Binance started a quarterly token burn program in 2017, committing to destroy tokens over time to reduce supply. Early burns signaled a “deflationary” token model (supply designed to fall) tied to Binance’s business performance and BNB utility. In April 2019, Binance deployed the genesis block for Binance Chain, marking the start of its own base-layer blockchain. The initial design prioritized fast trading and supported Binance DEX (a decentralized exchange) rather than general-purpose smart contracts. This was the first major step away from BNB being solely an Ethereum token.
Binance executed the BNB mainnet token swap in late April 2019, moving BNB from ERC-20 on Ethereum to a native Binance Chain asset (BEP-2). This positioned BNB for expanded use as “gas” (transaction fees) on a smart-contract chain.
By mid-2020, Binance Smart Chain moved through public testnets (including “Rialto” and later “Chapel”) to test validator operations and cross-chain features. These testnets helped developers experiment with tooling and deployment before mainnet. The process reflected Binance’s push to quickly bootstrap an application ecosystem ahead of broader DeFi adoption.
Binance Smart Chain launched its mainnet on September 1, 2020, enabling Ethereum-style smart contracts while operating alongside Binance Chain. BSC used a limited validator set and a Proof of Staked Authority (PoSA) model, aiming for fast and low-cost transactions. This launch created the core platform where BNB-based DeFi would rapidly expand in 2020–2021.
PancakeSwap launched in 2020 and grew into the best-known decentralized exchange on Binance Smart Chain, using an automated market maker (AMM) model based on liquidity pools. Its low fees and fast confirmations made it attractive during periods when Ethereum transaction costs were high. PancakeSwap’s rise helped drive everyday on-chain activity—swaps, liquidity provision, and yield farming—across the BSC ecosystem.
In September 2020, Binance introduced Launchpool, letting users stake assets like BNB to earn rewards from new token launches. This reinforced BNB’s role as a productive asset within Binance’s broader product suite, connecting centralized exchange services with DeFi-style incentives. The approach also helped attract users and liquidity during the 2020 yield-farming wave.
In November 2020, Venus Protocol launched on Binance Smart Chain, providing lending/borrowing markets and a synthetic stablecoin (VAI). Money markets became a key DeFi building block by enabling leverage, yield strategies, and capital efficiency. Venus’s launch showed BSC was becoming more than a simple smart-contract platform—it was developing core DeFi infrastructure.
During 2021, BSC saw rapid DeFi growth as users and developers moved into lower-fee environments for trading, lending, and farming. This period strengthened the link between BNB and on-chain usage: BNB was widely used for transaction fees and as collateral in protocols. By the end of 2021, BNB’s role had evolved from an exchange discount token into a central asset for a major smart-contract ecosystem.
