Monero began in April 2014 as Bitmonero, a community-led fork of the CryptoNote-based Bytecoin codebase. Early contributors quickly renamed it to Monero and emphasized privacy-by-design as a central goal. This launch set the stage for years of upgrades aimed at making transactions harder to trace.
By September 2014, Monero had to recover from a spam attack that tested the network’s resilience. The episode highlighted that privacy-focused systems also need strong defenses against low-cost transaction flooding. It helped push the project toward more mature engineering and research efforts.
The 0.9.0 “Hydrogen Helix” release delivered major internal improvements, including a faster database approach and better synchronization. These kinds of infrastructure upgrades mattered because privacy features increase computational work for nodes and wallets. A more efficient core made later privacy improvements more practical to deploy.
In March 2016, a protocol upgrade required all transactions to use a minimum ring size of 3 (meaning at least two decoys plus the real input). This reduced the risk created by transactions that used no decoys at all, which could weaken privacy for others. The change marked a shift toward making privacy protections less optional and more consistent across the network.
In January 2017, Monero upgraded the network to enable Ring Confidential Transactions (RingCT), which hide transaction amounts while still allowing the network to verify balances. This was a major privacy milestone because it reduced the information leaked by visible amounts. It also increased the project’s profile, drawing more technical attention and, over time, more regulatory scrutiny.
A September 2017 scheduled protocol upgrade required RingCT-only transactions and increased the minimum ring size to 5. This mattered because uniform use of the privacy-preserving transaction type reduces the “tells” that analysts can use to separate private from non-private activity. It also reinforced Monero’s identity as a privacy-first cryptocurrency rather than an opt-in privacy tool.
In April 2018, Monero scheduled a network upgrade that bumped the minimum ring size to 7 and changed its Proof-of-Work algorithm. Increasing ring size means more decoys are included with each spend, which generally makes transaction tracing harder. The upgrade continued the pattern of steadily tightening default privacy standards over time.
The October 2018 network update (supported by the 0.13.0 “Beryllium Bullet” release) enabled Bulletproofs, a type of cryptographic range proof that significantly reduced transaction size and fees. It also set the ring size globally to 11 for more uniform transactions. This combination aimed to strengthen privacy while improving usability and cost—key for wider adoption.
In March 2019, Monero upgraded its protocol again, including a new Proof-of-Work variant (often discussed as part of ongoing ASIC-resistance efforts) and changes to block weight and RingCT efficiency. These updates reflected a recurring tradeoff: maintaining decentralization and privacy can require disruptive upgrades. Regular hard forks also required exchanges and services to keep pace to stay compatible.
On November 30, 2019, Monero carried out a scheduled network upgrade to adopt RandomX, described by the project as a new long-term Proof-of-Work algorithm. The announcement also described privacy-related changes like phasing out long payment IDs and enforcing certain transaction rules. This upgrade was part of Monero’s broader effort to resist mining centralization while continuing to refine privacy defaults.
In September 2020, Monero released 0.17.0.0 “Oxygen Orion”, noting it was due to an upcoming October network upgrade. The release added support for CLSAG, a transaction signature format designed to reduce transaction size and improve verification speed. Faster verification can help privacy features scale, because heavy cryptography can otherwise make nodes slower and more expensive to run.
On January 15, 2021, Bittrex Global removed Monero markets from trading, alongside other privacy-focused coins. Delistings like this showed how privacy-by-default designs can conflict with exchange compliance expectations and evolving regulatory standards. By early 2021, Monero’s story was no longer only about cryptography upgrades—it also included growing market access and regulatory scrutiny pressures.
Monero development, privacy upgrades, and regulatory scrutiny (2014–2021)
