FTX and Alameda Research announced Serum, a decentralized exchange designed around an on-chain central limit order book (a trading system that matches buy and sell orders at specific prices). Serum’s design aimed to bring higher-speed trading to Solana and became a key piece of early Solana DeFi infrastructure.
Serum launched and began operating as one of the first major Solana DeFi applications. Its order-book model (common on centralized exchanges) influenced how liquidity and trading tools developed across the Solana ecosystem.
Orca launched as another AMM on Solana, emphasizing simpler interfaces and retail accessibility. Along with Raydium, Orca contributed to rapid growth in Solana token trading and liquidity provisioning during 2021.
Raydium launched as an automated market maker (AMM), a type of exchange that uses pooled liquidity and pricing formulas instead of matching individual orders. By integrating with Serum’s order book, Raydium helped bootstrap liquidity for many SPL tokens (Solana-native tokens) and made swapping easier for users.
A Solana-focused DeFi hackathon highlighted new projects building on Serum-style order books and Solana’s fast settlement. Mango Markets and PsyOptions were among the winners, signaling that a broader DeFi “app layer” was forming on Solana beyond a single flagship exchange.
Saber launched to support low-slippage swaps between stablecoins and similar-priced assets (often called “stable swaps”). This mattered because bridges and new token launches increased the need for deep, reliable stablecoin liquidity inside Solana DeFi.
The Solana Foundation announced winners of the Solana Season Hackathon, with thousands of builders participating and hundreds of projects submitted. This helped convert interest into new teams, tools, and prototype apps—fueling DeFi expansion through late 2021 and into 2022.
Solend launched as a lending and borrowing protocol, enabling users to supply assets to earn interest and to borrow against collateral. Lending markets expanded what users could do with Solana-based tokens beyond trading, and they became central to DeFi activity during the 2021–2022 cycle.
Wormhole launched on mainnet to move messages and assets between Solana and other chains, such as Ethereum and others supported at launch. This reduced friction for bringing liquidity (like wrapped tokens and bridged stablecoins) into Solana DeFi, which supported the ecosystem’s growth during the 2021 boom.
Solana’s network stalled for about 17 hours after heavy bot-driven traffic during a token sale (IDO) overwhelmed validators and disrupted consensus. The incident was a major stress test for Solana DeFi because exchanges and lending apps depend on continuous block production to function safely.
In January 2022, Solana experienced periods of degraded performance tied to high transaction load and duplicate transactions, creating failed or delayed transactions for users. These issues highlighted how fast-growing DeFi usage (and bot activity) could pressure network reliability and user experience.
A surge of transactions linked to NFT minting bots caused Solana validators to fall out of consensus, leading to a multi-hour outage and a coordinated restart. While not strictly “DeFi,” the event affected DeFi directly because DEXs, lending protocols, and liquidations depend on the chain staying online.
Solana’s mainnet-beta stopped producing blocks for several hours due to stalled consensus linked to a bug involving durable nonce transactions (a feature used to make transactions valid for longer). This was another reliability setback during the period when Solana DeFi was trying to mature beyond early growth.
FTX filed for bankruptcy, and its close ties to Serum and the broader Solana ecosystem created immediate trust and security concerns. In response, parts of the community moved to a new fork of Serum’s codebase (OpenBook) to reduce reliance on FTX-controlled keys—marking a turning point in how Solana DeFi organized itself after rapid expansion.
