Within days of the early media coverage, U.S. senators publicly called for federal law enforcement to shut Silk Road down. Their focus was on the site’s drug sales and the combination of Tor plus Bitcoin, which they argued made enforcement harder. This helped frame Silk Road as a high-priority target.
The DEA posted a forfeiture notice reporting a seizure of 11.02 bitcoins tied to a drug case connected to a Silk Road user. While small compared with later actions, it showed U.S. agencies were beginning to treat Bitcoin as a seizable asset linked to criminal investigations. This was an early sign that law enforcement could follow and take cryptocurrency.
On October 1, 2013, the FBI arrested Ross Ulbricht at the Glen Park Library in San Francisco and seized his laptop. Investigators said capturing the laptop while it was unlocked was key because it could contain access to Silk Road accounts and Bitcoin wallets. The arrest tied the alleged site operator directly to the online marketplace’s administration.
After the operation against Silk Road, prosecutors said authorities seized about 26,000 bitcoins tied to the case at that stage. This made the shutdown not only a marketplace takedown but also a major early test of whether government could seize cryptocurrency at scale. It also signaled that Bitcoin’s use in illegal trade could bring large forfeiture actions.
Journalists and Bitcoin users tracked the government-controlled wallet addresses used to hold seized Silk Road bitcoins. Because Bitcoin transactions are recorded on a public ledger (the blockchain), observers could watch large transfers and even send tiny transactions with public messages. This highlighted a key tension: Bitcoin can hide identities, yet still leaves a public transaction trail.
In late October 2013, federal prosecutors in New York announced the seizure of 144,336 bitcoins connected to Ulbricht, described at the time as the largest-ever bitcoin seizure. In June 2014, the U.S. Marshals Service announced it would auction about 29,656.5 bitcoins seized from Silk Road-related wallets. This was an important shift: it treated Bitcoin as an asset the state could custody and sell like seized property.
The first U.S. Marshals bitcoin auction took place on June 27, 2014, selling the 29,656.5 BTC in multiple blocks. The auction format aimed to prevent market disruption while still converting seized cryptocurrency into government proceeds. The event also helped normalize the idea of institutional buyers acquiring Bitcoin through official channels.
After the auction, reporting identified venture capitalist Tim Draper as the buyer who won all blocks of the first sale. This outcome showed that seized Silk Road bitcoins could flow from criminal investigations into mainstream investment portfolios.
