Alibaba launched Alipay as an escrow-based payment tool to build trust for Taobao’s early consumer-to-consumer marketplace. Under escrow, the buyer’s payment is held until goods are received in acceptable condition. This helped Taobao compete in an e-commerce market where fraud and low trust were major barriers.
As Taobao and Alibaba’s retail platforms grew, Alipay expanded from a marketplace tool into a broader third-party payment service. This set the stage for Alipay to be used outside Alibaba’s own sites and to become a major non-bank payments provider in China.
Alipay moved toward mobile by developing and testing phone-based payment features, then promoting the service more broadly. Alipay and Tianhong Asset Management launched Yu’e Bao, letting users invest idle wallet balances into a money market fund. This linked payments with wealth management and encouraged users to keep money inside the Alipay ecosystem. Yu’e Bao quickly became a flagship example of “internet finance” in China.
Alibaba acquired a controlling stake in Tianhong Asset Management, the fund manager behind Yu’e Bao. This strengthened the connection between Alipay’s wallet balances and investment products managed by a closely linked partner. The move helped Ant’s ecosystem integrate payments, savings, and asset management more tightly.
Reports described Alipay preparing Zhaocaibao as a short-term wealth-management marketplace, following the early success of Yu’e Bao. The idea was to offer more investment choices through Alipay, not just payments. This showed how Alipay’s wallet strategy was becoming a broader financial platform strategy.
Alibaba’s financial businesses were brought under a new, separate affiliate, Ant Financial Services Group. Ant Financial integrated Alipay with related offerings in lending, wealth management, and insurance, aiming to serve individuals and small businesses using internet technology and data. This reorganization marked a clearer “platform company” structure around Alipay.
Alibaba and Ant Financial announced completion of a restructuring that clarified how the two companies would work together after Ant’s formation. Ant Financial was described as the parent company of Alipay, while agreements governed asset transfers and ongoing relationships. This provided a more formal corporate framework for Ant’s growing role in financial services.
Ant Financial’s Sesame (Zhima) Credit began offering personal credit scores after being selected in a central-bank-backed pilot program for individual credit rating services. The scores used a mix of online and offline data to estimate creditworthiness and unlock conveniences like easier access to certain services. This expanded Alipay’s role from payments into identity and risk assessment for consumer finance.
Ant Financial confirmed a major fundraising round that valued the company in the tens of billions of dollars. The funding supported expansion and signaled strong investor belief that Alipay’s payments base could be monetized through adjacent financial products. It also highlighted Ant’s growing independence as a financial-technology platform rather than a single payment tool.
Ant Financial raised $4.5 billion in a widely reported funding round, and reports cited Alipay’s huge user base and transaction volume. The scale underscored the success of integrating mobile wallets with investments, credit services, and other financial products under Ant. By this point, Alipay’s rise had helped make mobile-first payments a mainstream part of China’s economy.
