By 2011, Adyen was profitable, which mattered because it reduced dependence on outside funding while the company built out its technology and merchant base. In 2012, Adyen began expanding globally, including opening offices in cities such as San Francisco, Paris, and London. Establishing on-the-ground teams helped it sell to multinational merchants and support them in key markets. This marked a shift from a Europe-centered startup to a company built for global enterprise payments.
Also in 2012, Adyen obtained a pan-European acquiring license, allowing it to expand its card-acquiring capabilities across Europe. “Acquiring” is the regulated function that connects merchants to card networks and settles card payments. This step supported Adyen’s strategy of controlling more of the payments chain instead of depending on multiple banks.
In 2012, Adyen processed more than $10 billion in payment transactions worldwide and reported strong growth in mobile payments and merchant adoption. Hitting this milestone showed that the platform could handle large transaction volumes reliably. It also helped validate Adyen’s pitch to global merchants: one platform for many payment types and markets.
In December 2014, Adyen raised $250 million in funding led by General Atlantic, with participation from Temasek and existing investors including Index Ventures and Felicis Ventures. The round gave Adyen more resources to expand internationally, deepen acquiring capabilities, and build out POS offerings. It also signaled that major investors viewed the company as a long-term global payments infrastructure player.
By 2014, Adyen publicly reported adding major new customers including Facebook, Spotify, and Airbnb. Winning these high-scale merchants mattered because their international footprints pressure-test payment routing, fraud controls, and local payment method support. These customer wins strengthened Adyen’s reputation as an enterprise-grade payments partner.
Adyen reported rolling out an “omni-channel” payments solution for retailers in 2014, connecting online and in-store payments through one integrated platform. This was a key strategic move beyond pure e-commerce, aimed at giving merchants a single view of payments across channels. It also set up Adyen’s later expansion into point-of-sale (POS) technology.
By late 2015, Adyen was valued at about $2.3 billion, placing it among Europe’s largest “unicorns” (private startups valued at $1 billion or more). The valuation reflected rapid volume growth and demand from large, global merchants. It also reinforced the company’s strategy of investing in a broad payments stack, including acquiring and POS.
In 2016, Adyen obtained an acquiring license in Brazil through BIN sponsorship, a pathway that can enable card acceptance and settlement under a sponsor arrangement. Expanding in Brazil mattered because local acquiring can improve authorization rates and reduce cross-border complexity for merchants. This step fit Adyen’s broader strategy of building local connections in major markets.
Adyen reported processing $50 billion in transaction volume in 2015 and emphasized expansion of its point-of-sale offering, including enabling U.S. businesses to use a single EMV-compliant solution across channels. EMV refers to chip-card payment standards designed to reduce counterfeit fraud. This period shows Adyen moving from “online payments success” toward a unified commerce platform.
By the end of 2016, Adyen had established the core elements of its “unified payments platform” rise: enterprise merchant wins, high processing volumes, expanding local acquiring, and a growing in-store POS capability. This period closed the 2006–2016 arc with Adyen positioned as a global payments infrastructure provider rather than a narrow gateway. The next phase (after 2016) would focus on more licenses and broader geographic coverage to deepen that model.
