Square announced Square Capital, using seller payment data to offer cash advances to eligible businesses in its network. This mattered because it extended Square from processing payments into financing, based on information Square already had from daily sales. The move increased the value of staying on Square’s platform for core operations.
Square announced an investment partnership with Victory Park Capital to expand Square Capital. The company framed the program as “data-driven,” using sales history and cash flow patterns to offer financing more quickly. Square filed its S-1 registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, a major step toward becoming a public company. The filing reflected Square’s growth from a phone-based card reader into a broader seller ecosystem combining payment acceptance, POS software, and financing.
