Stripe launched publicly in September 2011, offering businesses a faster way to start accepting card payments online. In 2012, Stripe expanded beyond the United States by launching in Canada. This mattered because payments rules, banking relationships, and compliance requirements differ by country. The Canada rollout marked an early step toward building a global payments platform rather than a U.S.-only product.
On October 10, 2012, Stripe released Stripe Connect, designed for businesses that need to pay multiple parties (for example, marketplaces and software platforms). Connect helped these companies onboard sellers and route payments, which is more complex than a single merchant accepting a card charge. This expanded Stripe from “payments for one business” into infrastructure for platform business models.
On March 1, 2013, Stripe began a UK closed beta, bringing its API-first approach into a major European market. Entering the UK required adapting to local payment practices and currency needs. This move signaled a shift from early U.S./Canada growth toward a broader global footprint.
On January 22, 2014, Stripe announced a funding round of more than $80 million at a reported $1.75 billion valuation. Stripe described the financing as supporting international expansion, reflecting the high cost of building payments infrastructure across countries. The funding helped Stripe scale beyond a single product into a broader, global platform.
On March 27, 2014, Stripe said it started testing Bitcoin payments with a select group of users. The test showed Stripe’s interest in expanding beyond card rails while still focusing on making payment acceptance simple for merchants. On February 24, 2016, Stripe launched Atlas, a toolkit to help founders set up U.S. companies and start operating online. Atlas bundled incorporation, banking, and other setup steps that often slow down cross-border entrepreneurship. On October 19, 2016, Stripe introduced Radar, using machine learning to detect and block fraudulent transactions. Fraud prevention is a major cost and risk for online businesses, especially as they scale and expand internationally. On June 1, 2017, Stripe rolled out Sigma, an analytics product that lets businesses query payments data using SQL (a common language for working with databases). By making reporting and analysis easier, Stripe reduced the need for customers to build separate data pipelines. This reinforced Stripe’s shift toward a full platform for operating an online business, not just accepting payments.
On April 5, 2018, Stripe launched Stripe Billing to help companies manage subscriptions and recurring invoices. Recurring billing can be complex because it involves retries, proration, and ongoing customer payment updates. Billing expanded Stripe’s platform deeper into how businesses earn revenue, not just how they accept one-time payments.
On January 23, 2018, Stripe announced it would stop supporting Bitcoin payments, and set April 23, 2018 as the end date. Stripe cited problems like slow transaction confirmation and rising fees, which made Bitcoin harder to use for everyday purchases. The change showed Stripe prioritizing reliable, high-success-rate payment methods for merchants.
On July 26, 2018, Stripe unveiled Stripe Issuing, which lets businesses create physical or virtual cards using an API. This extended Stripe from card acceptance into card creation—supporting new business models like expense cards or on-demand delivery purchasing. Issuing also strengthened Stripe’s platform approach by connecting payouts and spending to the same infrastructure.
On September 17, 2018, Stripe announced Stripe Terminal, combining card-reader hardware with SDKs and APIs for building in-person checkout. Terminal aimed to help internet-first companies unify online and offline payments and customer data. By 2018, Stripe’s growth story had become a broader end-to-end payments platform: online acceptance, fraud tools, subscriptions, card issuing, and point-of-sale expansion.
