The domain bitcoin.org was registered, creating an early public home for the Bitcoin project before its design was formally announced. This step helped make later software and documentation easier to find and share in a decentralized community.
Satoshi Nakamoto posted a link to the paper “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” to a cryptography mailing list. The paper proposed a way to send online payments without a trusted middleman, using a peer-to-peer network and proof-of-work (computational work used to secure the ledger).
Bitcoin’s first block (the “genesis block,” also called Block 0) was mined, marking the operational start of the network. The block included the message “The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks,” linking Bitcoin’s launch to the 2008–2009 financial crisis context.
Satoshi released the first public, open-source Bitcoin client (version 0.1). This made it possible for others to run nodes, mine, and participate directly, turning the design into a working system with multiple independent operators.
Satoshi sent 10 BTC to cryptographer Hal Finney, which is widely cited as the first Bitcoin transaction between two people. It served as an early test that the network could transfer value, not just create new coins through mining.
Satoshi created the Bitcointalk forum, which became a central place for troubleshooting, proposing changes, and coordinating early adoption. This helped Bitcoin’s development move from a small mailing-list idea to a broader open-source community project.
BitcoinMarket began operations, often cited as the first cryptocurrency exchange in the modern sense (a trading platform matching buyers and sellers). It helped establish price discovery—an observable market price—instead of private, one-off trades arranged in forums.
Laszlo Hanyecz paid 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, a transaction widely recognized as the first documented purchase of a real-world good using bitcoin. It showed bitcoin could function as money in practice, not only as a technical experiment.
Mt. Gox launched its bitcoin exchange and price-quoting service. Over time it became a dominant marketplace for bitcoin trading, showing both the rapid growth of exchange infrastructure and the risks of concentrating activity in a single company.
A serious software flaw (an “integer overflow,” where very large numbers wrap around incorrectly) allowed a transaction to create about 184 billion BTC in block 74,638, violating Bitcoin’s intended supply limits. Developers released a fix within hours and the network reorganized to reject the invalid history, demonstrating early crisis response and the practical limits of “immutability” in emergencies.
Jed McCaleb sold Mt. Gox to Mark Karpelès, shifting control of the rapidly growing exchange to a new operator. The handoff mattered because exchange policies and security practices strongly influenced how safe and accessible bitcoin trading was for the public.
A miner using Bitcoin 0.8.0 produced a block that older nodes could not validate, splitting the network into two competing chains for a short time. Major mining pools coordinated to downgrade software and reunify the network, and a follow-up release (0.8.1) reduced the risk of repeating the incompatibility.
U.S. authorities seized funds linked to Mt. Gox’s U.S. operations, citing issues related to money-transmission compliance. This was an early, visible sign that bitcoin exchanges were becoming subject to financial regulation, shaping how exchanges would operate going forward.
By late 2013, bitcoin’s user base and trading volumes had grown sharply, and major exchanges played a central role in access and price formation. At the same time, repeated operational and security problems at large exchanges—especially Mt. Gox—highlighted a key lesson of Bitcoin’s early era: the protocol could be decentralized, but much of the surrounding financial infrastructure was not.
