This became a key turning point for the ICO market by signaling that many token sales could face registration and enforcement requirements.
The Byzantium hard fork activated as part of Ethereum’s “Metropolis” roadmap, adding features such as improved error handling and new cryptographic tools. It also changed economics (including the block reward) and helped prepare the network for future scaling and protocol evolution.

The SEC announced that Munchee halted its ICO and refunded investors after the agency raised concerns about an unregistered securities offering. The case reinforced that calling a token a “utility” does not avoid securities laws when marketing emphasizes investor profit expectations.
The EOS token sale ran for nearly a year and raised about $4.1 billion, making it one of the largest ICOs of the period. Coming after major network growing pains and rising regulatory scrutiny, it marked a high-water point before the broader ICO market cooled and shifted toward more regulated fundraising approaches.
