Contactless card payments in the UK began with a low per-transaction limit of £10. The cap helped manage risk while banks and retailers tested whether consumers would trust tapping a card without entering a PIN for small purchases.
In September 2007, Barclaycard launched OnePulse, a card that combined a Visa contactless feature with Transport for London’s Oyster travel card. It was an early public rollout that showed how “tap and go” could work for everyday, low-value purchases and transit in a busy city.
In 2010, the UK raised the contactless spending limit to £15. This small increase mattered because it made contactless usable for a wider set of routine purchases, supporting more frequent “tap and go” habits.
In June 2012, the UK increased the contactless limit to £20. Raising the cap made it easier to pay for more common items (like quick groceries), which encouraged both consumer use and retailer investment in contactless terminals.
By 2014, the UK Cards Association reported that contactless use had grown rapidly, with more contactless transactions in 2014 than in the previous six years combined. This signaled a shift from pilot-style usage to wider mainstream acceptance, setting up further increases in limits.
In July 2015, Apple Pay launched in the UK, letting people pay with phones and watches at contactless terminals. Mobile wallets added extra security features (like device authentication and tokenisation), helping contactless-style payments spread beyond physical cards.
On 1 September 2015, the UK’s contactless limit rose from £20 to £30. This change was important because it brought typical supermarket basket sizes under the tap limit, making contactless practical for many more everyday trips.
By late 2016, major supermarkets had broadly adopted contactless acceptance, including Sainsbury’s rollout. Grocery payments are frequent and time-sensitive, so wider supermarket coverage helped make tapping feel normal and useful for daily life.
For 2016, the UK Cards Association reported contactless transactions totaling about £25 billion in value, up sharply from 2015. The jump showed that contactless was moving beyond occasional use and becoming a common way to pay in shops and other everyday settings.
UK Finance reported that 6.3 billion contactless payments were made in the UK in 2018, reflecting strong year-on-year growth. The report linked the surge to more retailers and transport operators accepting contactless, which reduced the need for cash for routine purchases.
In 2019, the UK made 8.6 billion contactless payments in total, valued at about £80.5 billion. By this point, contactless had become a central part of how people paid for everyday items, supporting a broader shift toward card-based and digital payments.
By the end of 2019, contactless payments were no longer a niche feature: billions of taps per year made “tap and go” a routine choice for many shoppers. This 2007–2019 period ended with the UK positioned for even faster growth afterward, as more people and more locations relied on contactless for day-to-day spending.
