Hammurabi turned against Mari and moved to bring it under Babylonian control. This ended Mari’s independence and removed the palace as the governing center of a local kingdom. For the palace-temple economy, the conquest was a hard break: administrative priorities, leadership, and institutional funding were disrupted by force.
Large numbers of tablets survived because they were stored in the palace and were preserved by destruction and burning. Modern summaries report tens of thousands of tablets and fragments from the palace archive, including administrative and legal texts as well as thousands of letters. Ironically, the collapse of Mari’s palace administration is what allowed later historians to study it in detail.
Mari and Babylon were allied for part of this period, but their relationship shifted as Hammurabi expanded his power. Control of trade routes and strategic river systems could turn partners into competitors. This rising pressure mattered for Mari’s economic administration because war and diplomacy directly affected taxation, provisioning, and the movement of people and goods through the palace system.
Mari’s archive is famous for its large letter collection, including correspondence between the king and officials across different districts. These letters connect politics and economics: orders for supplies, troop support, travel, and temple or palace obligations often overlap in the same administrative communications. Together with accounting texts, they reveal how decisions at the center shaped day-to-day resource flows.
Thousands of Mari documents are administrative dockets that record rations for personnel and deliveries of animals and textiles. Such records show how labor and goods were organized through palace offices, with measured distributions to workers, dependents, and specialists. This is a hallmark of a command-style palace-temple economy: officials allocate resources according to institutional priorities, not individual purchasing power.
Mari’s palace administration produced large runs of economic records to track incoming and outgoing goods. One well-known set, called the “king’s meals” (naptan sharrim), records grain-store accounts and related provisioning. These texts show the palace acting as a central organizer—collecting, storing, and redistributing staples through a managed system rather than open-market exchange.
Zimri-Lim returned from exile and expelled Yasmah-Addu, becoming king of Mari. Under Zimri-Lim, Mari entered its best-documented phase, with a palace-centered administration that coordinated labor, supplies, and diplomatic ties. Much of what historians know about Mari’s command-style economic management comes from documents produced during and around his reign.
During the Old Babylonian period, Mari’s royal palace functioned as a large administrative complex rather than a simple residence. Archaeologists documented a vast building with hundreds of rooms and courtyards, including official apartments, work areas, and spaces linked to cult (religious) activity. This scale helps explain how palace officials could manage stored goods, personnel, and temple-linked offerings as part of a command economy.
When Shamshi-Adad I died, the political structure he built began to unravel. Mari’s leadership changed rapidly, and control from the north weakened. This transition created an opening for Mari’s former ruling line to return, reshaping palace administration and its relationships with temples, tribes, and neighboring states.
Around this period, the regional conqueror Shamshi-Adad I brought Mari under his control and placed his son Yasmah-Addu on the throne. The palace remained the center of government, but Mari’s resources and officials were increasingly drawn into a larger, empire-wide system. This set the administrative background for the later palace-temple economy documented in Mari’s archives.
In early August 1933, a chance find at Tell Hariri (the mound covering ancient Mari) brought the site to official attention. French authorities and scholars connected the discovery to the Louvre, and archaeologist André Parrot was sent to investigate. This modern rediscovery began the process that would uncover the palace plan and the famous administrative archive.
Between 1936 and 1939, André Parrot’s excavations in the palace uncovered the Royal Archives of Mari. French cultural-heritage summaries describe an ensemble of about 20,000 tablets, mixing administrative texts (tracking palace reserves) and letters addressed to the king. This discovery made Mari a key case study for palace-temple economic administration in the early 2nd millennium BCE.
