Chandragupta Maurya founded the Mauryan Empire and built a highly centralized administration. This state capacity—regular taxation, officials, and record-keeping—created the conditions for sustained public spending and selective exemptions that later mattered for religious institutions.
A Mauryan-period copper plate from Sohgaura describes the creation of multiple granaries for use during famine and scarcity. It is important because it shows the Mauryan state organizing storage and distribution of grain—an economic tool that could also support communities tied to temples and other institutions in hard times.
After Aśoka’s accession, the Mauryan state used edicts carved on rocks and pillars to communicate policy and moral guidance. This step matters for temple-economy questions because the edicts are among the clearest surviving records of how the state spoke about religious communities, gifts, and conduct.
In Major Rock Edict 11, Aśoka lists key parts of dhamma (moral conduct) and includes liberality toward both Sramanas (renunciant ascetics) and Brahmanas. The message links ethical rule with material support for religious specialists, implying that state and elite giving to Brahmanical figures remained publicly valued.
Major Rock Edict 12 says the king honors many sects, including by gifts and offerings, while urging restraint in religious criticism. For economic history, this shows a framework where the state publicly accepts supporting multiple religious communities, rather than funding only one tradition.
Aśoka’s commemorative pillar at Lumbini records that the village was made tax-free (or tax-relieved) and that it paid only an eighth share of produce. This is a concrete example of Mauryan fiscal power being used to privilege a sacred site—an important precedent for later religious land and revenue arrangements.
Surviving Mauryan-era monumental remains tied to imperial patronage are more clearly documented for Buddhist sites (for example, early work at Sanchi) than for Brahmanical temples. This matters because it suggests that while Brahmanas are respected in the edicts, clear material traces of state-funded Brahmanical temple construction are harder to pin to the Mauryan period.
Unlike later centuries, the Mauryan period has limited surviving inscriptions that look like formal land-grant charters to Brahmanical temples. This creates a key historical constraint: arguments about widespread Mauryan land grants to Brahmanical temples often rely on inference, later texts, or later practice rather than abundant Mauryan grant records.
After Aśoka’s reign, the Mauryan Empire weakened and eventually ended. Political fragmentation changed how religious institutions were supported: regional rulers and local elites increasingly became major patrons, setting the stage for more visible temple-centered giving.
Post-Mauryan Sanskrit inscriptions such as the Hathibada–Ghosundi records point to developing Vaishnavism traditions and the construction of a religious compound dedicated to Saṃkarṣaṇa and Vāsudeva. This evidence is important because it shows clearer traces of Brahmanical (Hindu) devotional institutions and built spaces emerging strongly after the Mauryan era.
In the Mathura region, early 1st-century CE inscriptions mention temples, gateways, and sacred images (pratima), indicating established temple worship and supporting infrastructure. These records help explain why later land grants to temples became such a prominent economic system: temples were now stable, public institutions that could hold resources.
In later periods, the brahmadeya model—tax-free land gifts to Brahmanas—became a widespread practice, often recorded in detailed copper-plate charters. This later documentary pattern provides the clearest evidence for sustained state support to Brahmanical religious specialists through land and revenue rights, even though it is better attested after the Mauryan period than during it.
