Pierre Omidyar launched AuctionWeb in early September 1995 as a site where individuals could list items for sale and bid in timed auctions. This origin anchored eBay’s early identity as a consumer-to-consumer (C2C) marketplace built around auctions and community trust.
In September 1997, AuctionWeb was officially renamed “eBay,” signaling a shift from a side project into a branded marketplace business. The rebrand supported rapid growth by making the platform easier to market and recognize globally.
eBay’s initial public offering (IPO) in September 1998 brought in capital and public-market visibility. The IPO helped eBay invest in infrastructure and international growth as online trading moved from niche hobby to mainstream commerce.
In June 2000, eBay agreed to acquire Half.com, a marketplace centered on fixed prices rather than bidding. The move reflected a growing belief that many buyers wanted faster, more retail-like purchasing alongside auctions.
After a trial, eBay made its “Buy It Now” option permanent in early 2001. This feature let a buyer purchase immediately at a set price, reducing reliance on waiting for auctions to end and moving the site toward a more managed marketplace experience.
In February 2001, eBay announced it would acquire iBazar, a major European auction platform operating in multiple countries. The deal helped eBay strengthen its international footprint and made cross-border, multi-country marketplaces a bigger part of its strategy.
In July 2002, eBay announced a plan to acquire PayPal, reflecting how important integrated, faster payments were becoming for online marketplaces. This marked a shift from a platform that mainly matched buyers and sellers to one that increasingly managed key transaction steps like payment.
In early October 2002, eBay completed its acquisition of PayPal. With PayPal inside the company, eBay began replacing its older payment option (Billpoint), moving toward a more standardized and controlled payment experience for marketplace transactions.
In March 2003, eBay announced plans to fully integrate Half.com’s platform with eBay.com by the end of 2004. This signaled that fixed-price commerce was no longer just an add-on; eBay wanted a more unified system for listings, discovery, and transactions.
In June 2005, eBay signed an agreement to acquire Shopping.com, a comparison-shopping and product-discovery site. The acquisition reflected a strategic shift: helping shoppers find products (like in retail search) was becoming as important as hosting auctions.
In August 2005, eBay completed its acquisition of Shopping.com. Over time, the deal supported a broader strategy of connecting shoppers to listings through comparison shopping and search-like tools, not only through browsing auction categories.
In April 2006, eBay launched eBay Express, a U.S.-focused site designed for immediate purchase of new or never-used merchandise at fixed prices. The product aimed at “convenience-oriented” shoppers and reinforced eBay’s move from informal auctions toward a more curated shopping flow.
In 2007, eBay introduced Detailed Seller Ratings (DSRs), letting buyers score sellers on multiple dimensions like item description and shipping. By making quality more measurable than simple positive/negative feedback, eBay took a stronger role in setting and enforcing service standards.
In May 2008, eBay stopped allowing sellers to leave negative or neutral feedback for buyers. The change was meant to reduce “retaliation feedback” and improve buyer confidence, even though some sellers argued it shifted power toward buyers.
Starting in late October 2008, eBay tightened accepted payment methods so that PayPal (and a limited set of alternatives) became the main option for most U.S. transactions. This policy made checkout more consistent and easier to protect, moving eBay closer to a managed marketplace model rather than a loose network of independent deals.
By 2010, eBay’s core shopping experience had shifted away from being mainly C2C timed auctions toward a marketplace shaped by fixed-price options, integrated payments, and performance standards. These changes helped eBay feel more like an online retail marketplace—where the platform actively manages discovery, trust, and transaction rules—than a simple auction listing site.
