On October 3, 2002, eBay acquired PayPal in a stock-for-stock deal. This moved PayPal from a fast-growing standalone service into the core of eBay’s commerce experience, accelerating PayPal’s scale and normalizing platform-based payments for online sellers.
In October 2008, eBay agreed to buy Bill Me Later, an online credit product that let shoppers “buy now, pay later.” Adding consumer credit complemented PayPal’s payments flow by helping customers complete purchases when they did not want to pay immediately.
In 2009, Venmo was founded to make it easier to pay friends using mobile phones, first experimenting with text-message payments before shifting toward smartphone apps. Its design emphasized fast peer-to-peer transfers and a social activity feed, setting it apart from more traditional online wallets.
In July 2009, PayPal announced “Adaptive Payments,” an API (a software interface) that let developers build more flexible payment experiences, including splitting or routing payments. This was a key step in PayPal’s platform transition: moving from a single checkout button toward tools other companies could embed into their own apps and services.
On March 15, 2012, PayPal announced PayPal Here, pairing a mobile app with a card reader so small businesses could accept payments in person. This pushed PayPal beyond online checkout into point-of-sale payments, reflecting a broader platform strategy across online, mobile, and in-store commerce.

In August 2012, payments company Braintree acquired Venmo for about $26.2 million. The deal paired Venmo’s consumer peer-to-peer network with Braintree’s tools for app and online merchants, a combination that later became strategically important to PayPal’s mobile platform plans.
On December 19, 2013, PayPal completed its acquisition of Braintree, bringing Braintree’s developer-focused payment stack into PayPal. Because Braintree already owned Venmo, this also placed Venmo under PayPal’s control, aligning a fast-growing P2P app with PayPal’s broader platform ambitions.
