With VOC shares in circulation, buyers and sellers began trading them in Amsterdam on a continuing basis. This recurring trade is often treated as the start of the Amsterdam Stock Exchange as a modern securities market—one focused on tradable shares rather than only physical goods. It also created demand for price information, brokers, and standardized dealing practices.
The Dutch Republic chartered the Dutch East India Company (VOC), combining several earlier trading ventures into one large joint-stock company. Investors could buy shares, creating a new kind of widely held, transferable claim on future profits. This set the stage for a regular secondary market (resale market) in securities in Amsterdam.
After the VOC’s creation, investors subscribed capital to finance long overseas voyages that were expensive and risky. The VOC’s shares were designed to be transferable, encouraging buying and selling among investors rather than requiring them to wait for a final liquidation. This subscription period helped launch an active securities culture in Amsterdam.
The VOC documented investors’ ownership with share certificates, making claims to profits easier to recognize and transfer. Surviving early certificates (from the first decade) show how quickly the market moved from informal participation to recorded securities ownership. These documents also helped trading scale up because rights could be proven and exchanged.
The city of Amsterdam created the Wisselbank (Bank of Amsterdam) to improve trust and efficiency in payments and currency exchange. By offering stable book-entry transfers (account-to-account payments), it made it easier to settle large commercial and financial transactions. This strengthened Amsterdam’s position as a trading hub where securities deals could be cleared more reliably.
As speculation grew, Dutch authorities issued a proclamation limiting a practice similar to modern “naked short selling,” where traders sold shares they did not yet own. The measure was linked to tactics associated with Isaac Le Maire, who organized bearish strategies against VOC share prices. This episode is an early example of markets prompting debate over manipulation and the need for trading rules.
Amsterdam inaugurated a purpose-built exchange (the Beurs designed by Hendrick de Keyser). The building was first used as a commodities exchange, but it supported the city’s growing trading ecosystem that increasingly included securities. Over time, bringing traders into a dedicated space helped regularize hours, meeting places, and market norms.
The Dutch West India Company (WIC) received its charter, creating another major joint-stock enterprise whose shares could be traded. Adding a second large chartered company broadened the securities market beyond the VOC and increased opportunities for portfolio-style investing. It also linked securities trading even more closely to overseas expansion and colonial commerce.
A separate Dutch speculative episode—tulip contracts—surged and then collapsed in early 1637. While not the stock exchange itself, it showed how forward-style contracts and crowd behavior could drive prices far from ordinary values. The episode became a lasting reference point in Dutch discussions about speculation and market discipline.
In 1672, the Dutch Republic faced invasion and severe political and military pressure (the “Disaster Year,” or Rampjaar). Despite the crisis, Amsterdam’s financial infrastructure—especially the Wisselbank’s role in settling accounts—remained central to confidence in trade and payments. This period highlighted how wars and state security could affect market stability and liquidity.
Joseph de la Vega published Confusión de Confusiones in Amsterdam, describing the behavior of traders and the mechanics of deals being made around the exchange. The work discusses practices such as options and forward-style transactions in plain, dialogue-based form. It is widely treated as one of the first book-length analyses of a securities market and its participants.
A Europe-wide boom in share speculation, fueled in part by France’s Mississippi scheme and Britain’s South Sea Bubble, reached Dutch markets as well. In the Netherlands, the crisis was often discussed as windhandel (“wind trade”), a term used for high-risk trading in shares and derivatives with little real substance behind them. The episode produced widespread public criticism and a wave of satirical prints and texts.
As speculative schemes unraveled in 1720, tensions in Amsterdam could turn into open conflict, reflecting anger toward traders seen as profiting from “paper” deals. Contemporary accounts describe a notable confrontation on 5 October 1720 at an Amsterdam coffeehouse associated with share dealing. This moment illustrates how market crashes can spill into politics, policing, and public order.
After 1720, Dutch commentary and policy debates increasingly framed speculative share-and-derivatives dealing as socially dangerous, helping limit enthusiasm for new “project” companies. Amsterdam’s securities market continued, but the bubble became a major reference point for later discussions about regulation, transparency, and the difference between investment and speculation. In this way, 1720 served as a closing turning point for the early, formative era of Amsterdam’s securities trading.
