Parliament passes the first Navigation Act
Labels: First Navigation, English CommonwealthIn October 1651, England’s Commonwealth government passed a major trade law to favor English shipping and weaken Dutch dominance in carrying trade. It restricted imports from Asia, Africa, and the Americas to English ships (or ships from English colonies) and limited foreign “third-country” carrying in European trade. This act became a foundation for later mercantilist (state-directed, trade-protecting) rules across the empire.
