By about 900 CE, Ancestral Pueblo communities across the northern Southwest were increasingly living in larger, more permanent villages. In Chaco Canyon, growing populations and new building programs created conditions for more organized sharing and exchange of food and goods. These changes set the stage for gift-giving, reciprocal obligations, and public gatherings to become central social tools.
Tree-ring dates show that building at Pueblo Bonito began in the ninth century CE. As one of Chaco Canyon’s earliest and largest “great houses” (large, multi-room masonry buildings), Pueblo Bonito became a focal place where people could gather, store goods, and carry out ceremonies. Such buildings provided the physical settings that made feasting and redistribution practical at large scale.
Between about 900 and 1140 CE (the “Bonito Phase”), Chaco-area communities built many great houses in the canyon and at outlying settlements. This pattern suggests a regional system where people, materials, and ceremonial practices connected distant communities. As these links expanded, reciprocity likely became more formal: households and villages could be expected to contribute labor, food, or gifts for shared events.
Direct radiocarbon dating of scarlet macaw remains shows that macaws were present in Chaco Canyon by roughly 900–975 CE. Because macaws are not native to the region, their presence indicates long-distance acquisition networks and controlled access to rare, ritually important items. Such “exotics” likely moved through gift exchanges tied to ceremonies and alliances, strengthening obligations between communities.
Initial construction at Pueblo Alto began around 1020 CE on the mesa above Chaco Canyon. Research suggests relatively few families lived there compared with the site’s large facilities and deposits, pointing to special roles beyond ordinary residence. Storage areas and evidence of craft work fit models where some places managed goods that could be redistributed during large gatherings.
Chacoan engineers built wide, straight roads within the canyon and extending outward to many outlying communities. These roads likely supported movement of people for ceremonies and periodic events, not just day-to-day travel. Regular travel would have helped sustain exchange relationships, including the flow of food and valuable items used in feasts and ritual gift-giving.
Excavations at Pueblo Alto documented an exceptionally large refuse mound with very high quantities of pottery, much of it imported from the Chuska area to the west. One influential interpretation is that the scale and pattern of pottery breakage fits repeated large gatherings where vessels were used (and possibly intentionally broken) during rituals and feasts. If correct, this is material evidence for feasting as a way to build reciprocity and social ties across the Chaco system.
Residue analysis of rare cylinder jars from Pueblo Bonito found evidence of cacao, a tropical plant associated with Mesoamerican traditions. Because cacao is not grown in the northern Southwest, its use implies long-distance exchange and careful control over special foods and drinks. In feasting contexts, rare consumables can act as powerful gifts that create obligations and reinforce leadership or ritual authority.
Around 1100 CE, the use of Pueblo Bonito’s cylinder jars ended and many were left in Room 28, where the room was intentionally burned and collapsed. Reporting on the re-excavation of Room 28 describes blocked doorways and ornaments (including turquoise and shell) sprinkled over the vessels before the fire was set. This episode suggests a major ritual change, likely affecting how feasting-related gifts and special drinks were managed and displayed.
Scientific sourcing studies show that turquoise found at Chaco came from multiple regions, including distant sources, indicating large trade and exchange networks. Turquoise and other valuables could circulate as gifts at gatherings, helping leaders or ritual groups build relationships across communities. These networks also tied Chaco to areas far beyond the canyon, supporting both reciprocity and forms of redistribution.
At Salmon Ruins in the Middle San Juan region, construction by migrants from Chaco began around 1090 CE and the site continued to be occupied and modified into the late 1200s. Its long use-life shows that Chaco-linked communities and traditions did not end instantly when Chaco’s central influence declined. Over time, feasting and reciprocal exchange likely adapted to new settlement patterns and more regional, rather than Chaco-centered, networks.
From about 1130 to 1180 CE, the northern Southwest experienced a major multidecade drought that reduced water availability and agricultural productivity. During this period, construction at Chaco’s great houses slowed or ceased, and the canyon’s role as a regional center declined. With fewer surpluses to share, large-scale feasts and redistribution systems would have been harder to sustain in their earlier forms.
Research argues that what ended around 1150 CE was Chaco Canyon’s role as the central place of a wider regional system, not an immediate disappearance of all Chacoan communities. Many great houses continued in altered roles, with changing ceremonial patterns and more localized leadership. This marks a shift from system-wide redistribution centered on Chaco toward smaller-scale reciprocity and community-based gathering practices.
By around 1300 CE, many Pueblo communities in the Four Corners region had migrated and reorganized, contributing to new, aggregated settlements elsewhere in the Southwest. Scholars describe this as a major reshaping of the Pueblo world following earlier changes at Chaco and later stresses in the region. In this new landscape, feasting and reciprocity continued, but as part of different community arrangements and ceremonial systems than those centered on Chaco’s great houses.
