Siida-based reciprocity frames reindeer pastoral life
Labels: siida, S miBy the early 1600s, many Sámi pastoralists in northern Fennoscandia organized work and resources through siidas (local groups of herding families). In this setting, reciprocal giving—sharing labor, access to grazing, and reindeer products—helped households manage risk in a harsh environment where weather and pasture conditions could change quickly. This created an economy where social ties and mutual obligations mattered alongside material goods.
