In this long era, many communities lived by hunting, fishing, and gathering, often near coasts and rivers. These settings supported repeated contact between groups, creating conditions for regular exchange of valued materials like obsidian (volcanic glass).
Early Jōmon pottery helped people cook and store foods such as fish, shellfish, nuts, and plants. Better storage reduced risk during seasonal shortages and made longer trips more practical. Over time, these changes supported more frequent movement of goods between coastal and inland zones.
Obsidian is sharp and breaks in predictable ways, making it useful for tools and weapons. Because obsidian forms only in specific volcanic areas, archaeologists can often trace artifacts back to their geological sources. This makes obsidian a key material for reconstructing Jōmon exchange routes across islands and regions.
Large shell middens (heaps of shells and other refuse) show that many Early Jōmon groups repeatedly used coastal sites over long periods. These places supported fishing and marine harvesting, but also served as gathering points where visitors could exchange materials and information. Coastal concentration helped connect communities along shorelines and across nearby waters.
Sannai-Maruyama in northern Honshu was occupied roughly 3900–2200 BCE and became the largest known Jōmon settlement. Finds there include items such as obsidian and other materials that are not local, indicating exchange with distant regions. A large settlement like this could coordinate food storage, craft production, and the movement of valued goods.
During the Middle Jōmon (often placed around 3rd millennium BCE), many regions show more settled communities and more durable buildings. More stable settlements made it easier to plan seasonal trips and maintain repeated trade partnerships. Regular exchange helped move high-quality stone, including obsidian, to places that lacked local sources.
Wada Pass in Nagano is noted as an obsidian production area associated with the Jōmon period. Obsidian linked to this source has been reported far from Nagano, including finds in Hokkaido, showing that exchange networks could span hundreds of kilometers. Such long-distance movement implies multiple “hand-to-hand” transfers or organized travel routes.
At Sannai-Maruyama, some objects (including obsidian and jade) are described as coming via trade because they are not native to the area. These materials likely had social value beyond basic utility, helping build alliances and obligations between communities. Prestige exchange can stabilize networks by making trade part of social and ritual life, not only survival.
Sannai-Maruyama’s occupation ended around 2300 BCE for reasons that remain uncertain, and researchers have linked its decline to changing conditions and resource pressure. When a large hub shrinks or is abandoned, exchange routes often shift toward other centers or become more regional. Obsidian trade likely continued, but with different community roles and pathways.
Several northern Jōmon sites include large stone circles dating to the later Jōmon, such as Ōmori Katsuyama (about 2000–1500 BCE). These places likely drew people together for ceremonies, burial practices, and shared events. Periodic gatherings would have been important moments for exchanging obsidian tools, raw stone, and other goods.
By the Final Jōmon (often placed roughly 1000–300 BCE), contacts and changes intensified in some regions, and the later shift toward the Yayoi period brought major economic changes. As farming spread, the balance between hunting-fishing-gathering and food production changed, affecting what people needed and traded. Exchange networks built in the Jōmon period provided routes and relationships that could be adapted to new goods and new ways of life.
