Melos obsidian becomes a prized Aegean toolstone
Labels: Melos Milos, Sta Nychia, DhemenegakiAt the start of the Neolithic in the Aegean, communities increasingly relied on obsidian (volcanic glass) for very sharp cutting edges. Melos (Milos) stood out because it had major obsidian sources—especially Sta Nychia and Dhemenegaki—that could supply islands and coasts far beyond the Cyclades. This set the stage for long-distance movement of raw stone well before written records.
