After the last Ice Age, warming temperatures raised sea levels and changed river mouths, estuaries, and shorelines around Iberia. These new coastal landscapes created predictable places to gather marine foods and materials such as shells. They also helped set the conditions for repeated travel and contact between coastal and inland groups.
On the Bay of Biscay coast (Asturias and Cantabria), Mesolithic communities built large shell middens—dense deposits of shellfish remains—often in caves and rockshelters. These sites show intensive coastal foraging and repeated use of the same places over time. Shell middens also created visible “anchors” on the landscape that could support social contacts and shared routines.
At Mesolithic shell-midden sites such as El Mazo, people selected marine shells (including Littorina obtusata and Trivia sp.) and modified them for personal ornaments. The evidence indicates shells were brought in and worked at the site, linking daily subsistence with symbolic display. Ornaments also matter for exchange studies because they are portable and can move between communities.
Stone-tool production in northern Iberia often relied on local raw materials, but small amounts of non-local “tracer” stones appear at some sites. Tracer flints are useful because their geological sources are limited and identifiable, allowing archaeologists to estimate movement or exchange routes. The presence of such stones suggests that contacts sometimes extended well beyond a single valley or coastline segment.
During the short cold phase known as the 8.2 ka event, El Mazo shows a shift toward a wider variety of stone sources. Non-local materials rise notably, including increased use of Flysch flint and other regional flints, indicating broader connections or higher mobility than in earlier and later phases. This episode is important because it shows exchange/movement networks could intensify during environmental stress or social change.
In the Tagus valley, large Mesolithic shell middens at Muge became prominent features in the landscape. Visibility and intervisibility studies suggest these sites were placed in ways that supported social organization and territorial signaling, not only food processing. This matters for exchange networks because durable, well-known gathering places can make it easier for different groups to meet, share materials, and maintain alliances.
Flysch flint sources lie far from some Cantabrian sites; at El Mazo, the nearest outcrops are estimated about 130–145 km away. Even when present in small percentages, this distance is significant for hunter-gatherer economies because it implies either long foraging rounds, down-the-line exchange (passing goods person-to-person), or occasional visits by outsiders. Such tracer stone helps map the size and direction of Mesolithic interaction corridors along the north coast.
Mesolithic evidence from the northwest Atlantic and inland areas includes coastal materials found far inland, such as Flysch flint and marine-shell ornaments. Reported distances in excess of 150 km indicate medium- to long-distance contacts between the Cantabrian coast and interior mountain zones. Researchers note that these patterns could reflect either exchange between groups or travel by highly mobile groups moving across regions.
Radiocarbon-based models show intensive hunter-gatherer burial activity in Portugal’s Tagus and Sado valleys during the Late Mesolithic, with the highest frequency around 7800–7450 cal BP. The study also identifies earlier burial episodes around 8500–8300 cal BP. These shared burial practices suggest stable communities and repeated aggregation—social conditions that can support regular exchange of valued items like shells and high-quality stone.
Recent geoarchaeological work on Asturian shell middens shows they are stratified deposits that can include complex formation processes, not just simple piles of dumped waste. This improves how archaeologists interpret where people lived and worked around middens, and how long sites were used. Better site-formation understanding strengthens conclusions about when and how exchange-related materials (non-local flint, ornaments) entered these deposits.
In southwestern Iberia, modeled radiocarbon evidence indicates a sharp decline in hunter-gatherer burial frequency after about 7450 cal BP, aligning with the spread of Neolithic lifeways. This does not mean foragers disappeared immediately; the record suggests overlap and coexistence for some generations. As farming spread, exchange systems likely shifted as new goods, new settlement patterns, and new social boundaries developed.
By the end of the Mesolithic (around 5000 BCE in many Iberian sequences), long-lived hunter-gatherer exchange practices—moving marine shells, ornaments, and identifiable flints across regions—were increasingly shaped by the rise of farming communities. The Neolithic introduced more settled food production and new material traditions, changing how people connected across the peninsula. Mesolithic shell-and-lithic exchange remains important as an earlier foundation for understanding later Iberian trade and social networks.
