Wickham rubber seeds shipped to Kew
Labels: Henry A, Kew GardensIn 1876, Henry A. Wickham delivered a large shipment of Hevea brasiliensis (rubber tree) seeds from the Amazon to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Seedlings raised at Kew were then sent onward to British colonial botanic gardens in South and Southeast Asia. This transfer later enabled plantation rubber to compete directly with Amazon wild rubber, shaping the boom’s long-term vulnerability.
