Company of Royal Adventurers receives English monopoly
Labels: Company of, Charles IIAfter the Stuart Restoration, Charles II granted a royal charter to the Company of Royal Adventurers Trading into Africa, giving it a monopoly over English trade along the West African coast. The company’s original focus was largely on commodities like gold, but it also became involved in trafficking enslaved Africans. This earlier chartered company set the institutional model that the later Royal African Company would expand.
