Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of Tordesillas, drawing a line that divided rights to explore, conquer, and trade in the Atlantic world. This diplomatic deal supported rapid colonization and helped connect European empires to Atlantic shipping routes. Those routes soon carried forced labor as well as goods.
In the 1640s, Dutch support helped Barbados shift toward large-scale sugar production for export. Plantation owners relied increasingly on enslaved labor from West Africa and built a powerful planter elite to control land, politics, and labor. This model spread across other Atlantic colonies, linking sugar profits to the slave trade.
England’s Crown granted a royal charter to the Royal African Company, expanding organized English involvement in African trading and slave trafficking. Chartered companies helped finance ships, forts, and contracts that moved captives into plantation economies. This pushed the Atlantic system toward higher volume and tighter state backing.
Louis XIV issued the 1685 ordinance later known as the Code Noir for France’s Caribbean colonies. It set legal rules for slavery, including forced religious conversion and harsh control over enslaved people’s lives and punishment. By making slavery a state-defined legal status, it strengthened plantation discipline and property claims.
The 1713 Peace of Utrecht granted Britain an asiento (contract) to supply enslaved Africans to Spanish colonies, largely through the South Sea Company. This tied slavery more directly to international diplomacy and imperial competition. The arrangement also encouraged smuggling and wider commercial conflicts around Atlantic trade.
Enslaved people in South Carolina launched the Stono Rebellion, aiming to escape toward Spanish Florida. The revolt was suppressed, but it frightened slaveholders and encouraged stricter laws and policing to prevent future uprisings. It also showed that resistance was a constant feature of plantation labor regimes.
During the French Revolution, the National Convention decreed slavery abolished in France’s colonies. The decision was shaped by events in Saint-Domingue and by wartime pressures, as France sought support against rival empires. It marked a major challenge to plantation slavery, even though enforcement varied by colony and later politics reversed course.
Napoleon’s government passed the Law of 20 May 1802, reversing earlier revolutionary abolition in key French colonial territories. The move aimed to rebuild plantation production and imperial revenue. It also intensified conflict in the Caribbean and became a warning that legal freedom could be withdrawn when colonial profits were prioritized.
A mass uprising of enslaved people in Saint-Domingue helped trigger the Haitian Revolution, which ultimately ended French rule and slavery there. Haiti declared independence in 1804, becoming a major turning point in the Atlantic world. The revolution reshaped debates about slavery, empire, and labor, and alarmed slaveholding societies across the Americas.
The UK Parliament passed the Slave Trade Act, outlawing British participation in the Atlantic slave trade. This did not end slavery itself in British colonies, but it shifted British policy toward suppressing slave trading at sea. The ban became a turning point that other states were pressured to follow, unevenly and often slowly.
After banning the trade, Britain formed the West Africa Squadron to patrol the African coast and intercept slave ships. Naval enforcement made slave trading riskier and more expensive, but it also raised disputes about searches, flags, and international law. The squadron’s long campaign shows how hard it was to stop a profitable, multinational system.
The U.S. Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves took effect, banning legal overseas importation of enslaved people into the United States. Illegal trafficking continued, but the law changed how U.S. slavery expanded—especially by increasing reliance on forced movement and sales within the country. This helps explain how plantation labor could grow even after international import bans.
Spain committed by treaty to abolish the slave trade across its dominions, with a key deadline set for 30 May 1820. In practice, trafficking continued illegally—especially to places like Cuba—because demand for plantation labor remained high and enforcement was weak. The gap between treaty promises and reality kept the Atlantic trade alive well into the 19th century.
Britain’s Slavery Abolition Act received Royal Assent in 1833 and took effect in 1834, ending slavery in most of the British Empire through a staged process. The law included compensation for slaveholders, not for the enslaved, reflecting how property claims shaped policy. Emancipation changed labor relations, but plantation economies often sought new coercive labor arrangements afterward.
The United States and Great Britain agreed to cooperate in suppressing the slave trade, including a joint naval patrol system off Africa. This mattered because slavers used multiple flags and ports, so enforcement depended on international coordination. The treaty shows how ending the trade increasingly relied on diplomacy and maritime policing, not just domestic laws.
Britain passed the Aberdeen Act, allowing British forces to treat Brazilian slave ships as subject to seizure. Brazil viewed this as aggressive interference, but it increased pressure on a major remaining importer of enslaved Africans. The act highlights how the late slave trade persisted partly through states that resisted enforcement until forced by external and internal pressures.
Brazil enacted the Queirós (Eusébio de Queirós) Law, making the Atlantic slave trade illegal and supporting stronger repression of trafficking. British pressure and naval seizures helped drive the shift, but Brazilian politics and security concerns also mattered. Although slavery continued inside Brazil, this law marked a major contraction of the transatlantic pipeline to the Americas.
After decades of patrols, Britain’s West Africa Squadron ceased to operate as an independent command in 1867. By this point, most transatlantic slave trading had been curtailed, though illegal trafficking and coercive labor systems persisted in different forms. The squadron’s end marks a clear closing point for the era when Atlantic navies made anti-slave-trade patrols a central mission.
