A diamond later known as the Eureka was found near Hopetown on the Orange River in 1867. Its identification helped convince colonial officials and prospectors that southern Africa could produce commercially valuable diamonds. This discovery helped trigger larger waves of prospecting and set the stage for South Africa’s mineral-driven economic transformation.
In 1869, the large “Star of South Africa” diamond was found along the Orange River. The size and publicity around the stone drew many more diggers and investors to the region. This accelerated the shift from small-scale finds to organized diamond prospecting and claim-holding.
Diamonds were discovered at Colesberg Kopje in 1871, leading to the “New Rush” diggings that soon became Kimberley. The dense concentration of claims encouraged new forms of financing, equipment use, and labor control compared with earlier river diggings. Kimberley quickly became a major center of extraction and trade, tying local production to global diamond markets.
In late 1871, the British moved to take formal control over the diamond-field region, creating the colony of Griqualand West. This helped the British state and colonial administration shape rules over land, claims, courts, and policing around the mines. Political control and mineral wealth became tightly linked, and the diamond fields became a key reason for expanding imperial authority inland.
By the mid-1880s, Kimberley companies increasingly housed Black mineworkers in tightly controlled “closed compounds.” Employers argued this reduced diamond theft and stabilized labor supply, but it also restricted workers’ movement and strengthened coercive workplace discipline. These systems became influential models for later labor control on the gold mines.
In 1886, the main Witwatersrand gold reef was identified, widely credited to George Harrison’s find on the farm Langlaagte. The reef’s scale attracted major investment and rapid in-migration, and it drove the founding and explosive growth of Johannesburg. Unlike many earlier gold finds, Witwatersrand mining quickly required deep-level techniques, large capital, and a large workforce.
In March 1888, Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato combined major Kimberley operations to form De Beers Consolidated Mines. Consolidation reduced competition among claim-holders and supported more centralized production and marketing. De Beers became a major example of how extraction in South Africa moved toward large-scale corporate control.
Mining houses created a collective body that became the Chamber of Mines, first loosely formed in 1887 and officially constituted in 1889. It helped coordinate lobbying, labor policies, and technical information across competing firms. This coordination strengthened large corporate influence over the state and over the rules that governed the gold economy.
From 29 December 1895 to 2 January 1896, the Jameson Raid attempted to trigger an uprising against the Transvaal government. The failed raid increased distrust and sharpened conflict between British imperial interests and the Boer republics, where much of the gold industry operated. It showed how control of the gold economy was becoming a driver of high-level political confrontation.
The South African War (Second Boer War) ran from 11 October 1899 to 31 May 1902 and heavily affected mining regions and rail supply lines. Fighting included the siege of Kimberley, underscoring the strategic value of diamond and gold centers. The war’s outcome ended Boer independence and reorganized political power in ways that favored a more unified, mineral-centered economy.
The Peace (Treaty) of Vereeniging was signed on 31 May 1902, ending the war and bringing the Transvaal and Orange Free State under British control. Reconstruction that followed prioritized restarting and expanding gold mining, including rebuilding administrative capacity and infrastructure. This period tightened the relationship between government and mining capital and laid groundwork for political union.
In 1904, the Transvaal government introduced an ordinance to facilitate importing indentured Chinese workers for the Rand gold mines, framed as a response to labor shortages after the war. The policy restricted Chinese workers mainly to unskilled mining work and tied them to controlled conditions. It reveals how the gold industry relied on state-backed labor systems to keep production and costs under control.
In 1909, the British Parliament passed the South Africa Act, creating the constitutional basis for uniting four colonies into one polity. The act reflected arguments that political union would improve coordination of railways, customs, and economic policy—key issues for mining and export industries. It helped align state structures more directly with the needs of a mineral-led economy.
On 31 May 1910, the Union of South Africa was inaugurated, uniting the Cape, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange River colonies. The new state brought mining-driven regions into a single national framework, strengthening centralized economic management and helping secure gold’s dominance in public finance and export earnings. This political outcome marked how diamond and gold discoveries (1867–1886) reshaped South Africa into a more integrated, extraction-centered economy by the early 20th century.
