In 1530, the Portuguese Crown sent Martim Afonso de Sousa to strengthen control over coastal Brazil and push more permanent colonization. This shift mattered because sugar production needed secure settlements, land grants, and coastal defenses to protect investment and shipping. The expedition helped set patterns that linked plantations to overseas export markets.
By 1532, early sugar milling and cane cultivation were underway around São Vicente, supported by knowledge from Atlantic islands and imported cane. These early mills showed how the engenho (a combined plantation-and-mill complex) could turn cane into exportable sugar. This was a foundation for the later Northeast plantation boom.
In 1534, King João III divided much of Portuguese America into hereditary captaincies, granting large coastal strips to private “donatários” (grantees). The goal was to speed settlement, defense, and cash-crop development without paying all costs from the Crown. In practice, successful captaincies in the sugar zone became key engines for plantation growth.
Around 1534, Engenho São Jorge dos Erasmos (near today’s Santos) was constructed as a major early sugar facility. Its scale illustrates how sugar required capital, machinery, land, and coerced labor—more than small farming could supply. These units became the basic building blocks of Brazil’s plantation export economy.
In 1549, Portugal created a centralized General Government for Brazil and founded Salvador as its capital. Central administration helped coordinate defense, taxation, and regulation—important for a high-value export like sugar. Salvador also became a major port city tied to the sugar economy and Atlantic slave trade networks.
By the mid-1500s, Pernambuco had multiple operating engenhos and was rapidly expanding cane cultivation and milling. This expansion mattered because it concentrated land, credit, and labor into a specialized export region. Over time, Pernambuco’s sugar output helped define Brazil’s role in Atlantic trade as a supplier of refined agricultural commodities.
As sugar expanded, plantation owners sought a large, controllable labor force. Over the 1500s–1700s, transatlantic trafficking brought millions of enslaved Africans to Brazil, and Brazil received a large share of those transported across the Atlantic. This forced migration underpinned the plantation export system by supplying labor for cane fields and mills.
In 1624, the Dutch West India Company captured Salvador, aiming to disrupt Iberian power and gain leverage over profitable Atlantic trade. Salvador’s value reflected how ports and shipping were essential to sugar exports. The city was retaken in 1625, but the episode signaled that Brazil’s plantation economy was a strategic target.
In 1630, Dutch forces captured key areas around Olinda and Recife in Pernambuco, the heart of Brazil’s sugar production. Control of territory and mills meant control of export revenue, shipping, and credit relationships. The occupation reshaped plantation governance and intensified conflict over who would profit from sugar exports.
From 1645, Portuguese-Brazilian forces and allies launched a sustained uprising against Dutch rule in Pernambuco. Victories such as the First (1648) and Second (1649) Battles of Guararapes undermined Dutch military power and morale. The fighting linked local plantation interests to imperial strategy, because restoring control meant restoring sugar revenues and trade routes.
By early 1654, Portuguese forces completed the recapture of Recife, ending the main Dutch colonial presence in northeastern Brazil. This outcome mattered because it returned plantation zones and export infrastructure to Portuguese control. It also left behind long-term economic effects, including shifts in competition and investment in sugar across the Atlantic world.
On 1661-08-06, Portugal and the Dutch Republic signed the Treaty of The Hague. The treaty formally recognized Portuguese sovereignty over Dutch Brazil (New Holland) in exchange for an indemnity payment. Diplomatic settlement helped stabilize ownership claims that shaped credit, shipping insurance, and long-distance trade connected to sugar exports.
In 1694, Portuguese forces destroyed Palmares, the best-known large quilombo (community formed mainly by escaped enslaved people) in the Northeast. Palmares’ long survival reflected how plantation slavery produced постоян attempts at escape and resistance that worried colonial authorities. Its fall strengthened planter control, while leaving a lasting legacy of resistance in Brazilian history.
On 1759-08-13, the Marquis of Pombal created the Companhia Geral de Pernambuco e Paraíba, a privileged monopoly company. It aimed to regulate and stimulate trade—especially sugar—by organizing shipping, credit, and imports into the plantation region under tighter Crown oversight. This marked a shift toward more direct state management of the export system.
In the early 1780s, the Companhia Geral de Pernambuco e Paraíba’s monopoly was ended under Queen Maria I, during the political shift sometimes called the Viradeira. Removing monopoly privileges changed who could profit from exporting sugar and supplying the region, and it reflected wider debates about regulation versus freer commerce. The plantation export economy continued, but with reworked trade controls.
On 1808-01-28, Prince Regent Dom João issued the Carta Régia (Royal Charter) opening Brazilian ports to commerce with “friendly nations.” This directly weakened the old colonial trade monopoly that had channeled exports through Portugal. For sugar and other plantation goods, it was a major turning point: export routes, import supplies, and commercial partners could change quickly.
