The Treaty of Allahabad grants the company diwani rights—the authority to collect land revenue—in Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa. Revenue collection gave the company a steady stream of income that could fund armies and administration, linking trade profits to territorial rule.
A major famine hits Bengal and Bihar in 1769–1770, during the early years of company revenue control. The crisis exposed weaknesses in governance and contributed to rising criticism in Britain about how the company managed its Indian territories.
Britain’s Parliament passes the Regulating Act to improve management of the company’s Indian territories. It creates the post of Governor-General of Bengal and signals that the British state would increasingly supervise a company that now governed people and land, not just trade.
Parliament passes Pitt’s India Act, creating a Board of Control to oversee the company’s civil, military, and revenue administration in India. The company remained important, but key decisions were more closely tied to the British government.
The Charter Act of 1813 removes the company’s monopoly on trade with India, while keeping its monopoly on trade with China and tea. This marks a shift: the company’s commercial privileges narrow, while its role as a territorial government continues.
The Government of India Act 1833 (often called the Charter Act 1833) ends the company’s remaining major trading monopolies and makes it primarily an administrative and governing body in India. In effect, it formalizes the company’s transformation from merchant enterprise to governing agency.
Sepoys in the Bengal Army mutiny at Meerut, and the unrest spreads rapidly to major cities including Delhi. The uprising becomes a broad challenge to British authority in India and is a key turning point in the company’s legitimacy as a ruler.
Parliament passes the Government of India Act 1858, transferring governing authority from the East India Company to the British Crown. This ends “Company rule” in India and creates new structures in London—especially the Secretary of State for India—to direct the Raj.
