VOC chartered to monopolize Dutch Asia trade
Labels: VOC, States GeneralThe States General of the Dutch Republic chartered the Dutch East India Company (VOC) as a single, state-backed company to reduce rivalry among Dutch merchants and challenge Iberian control of Asian trade. The charter granted the VOC a monopoly for Dutch trade in Asia and unusually broad powers, including making treaties and using armed force. These powers shaped the VOC’s later control of spice-producing regions in the East Indies.
