France created a state-backed trading company to compete with the English and Dutch East India companies in Asian and Indian Ocean trade. The company was granted major privileges, including a monopoly on French trade east of the Cape of Good Hope. This marked the start of a long effort to build French commercial and political influence around the Indian Ocean.
The company opened an early trading station (often called a “factory”) at Surat, a major Mughal port on India’s west coast. This gave French merchants a foothold in Indian markets and shipping networks. It also showed how the company relied on permissions and local politics to operate in Mughal India.
The French established a trading post at Pondicherry (today Puducherry) on India’s southeast coast, which became their most important base in India. Its location supported textile trade and access to regional ports across the Bay of Bengal. Pondicherry later served as the center of French administration and defense in India.
European conflicts frequently spilled into Asian trading competition, and Dutch forces captured Pondicherry in 1693. The loss exposed how vulnerable company settlements were to naval power and regional warfare. This disruption also pushed the French to rebuild defenses and reassert control when possible.
The Treaty of Ryswick ended the Nine Years’ War in Europe and led to Pondicherry being returned to French control. Regaining the port allowed the company to restore trade and administration from its key base. The episode underlined how European diplomacy directly shaped colonial trade outposts in India.
In 1719 the earlier French East India Company was absorbed into the Compagnie des Indes during John Law’s broader financial and corporate restructuring. This linked overseas trade to a major French financial experiment, which soon ran into crisis. The merger created a larger, reorganized company but also tied it to instability from the 1720 crash.
After reorganization in the early 1720s, the company strengthened its Indian Ocean network by obtaining Mauritius (Île de France) and establishing Mahé on India’s Malabar Coast. These sites supported shipping, resupply, and trade protection across long sea routes. The expansion shows the company’s strategy of combining island bases with coastal Indian settlements.
Joseph-François Dupleix became governor-general in 1742, leading French establishments in India during a period of rising rivalry with Britain. He pursued alliances with Indian rulers and built influence beyond simple trade. Under his leadership, the company moved further into military and political competition to defend and expand its position.
In 1746, French forces captured Madras (now Chennai), a major British base on the Coromandel Coast. The attack showed that company rivalry had become open warfare, backed by European fleets and troops. It also triggered negotiations that tied Indian outcomes to European peace settlements.
The European peace treaty ended the War of the Austrian Succession and required the mutual return of certain conquests, including Madras to England. This reversal reduced the French gain in India despite battlefield success. It also left the underlying company rivalry unresolved, setting the stage for renewed conflict.
In 1754, France and Britain agreed to end fighting tied to succession disputes in southern India. The Treaty of Pondicherry recognized the British-backed candidate as Nawab of the Carnatic, limiting French political leverage there. The peace proved temporary, since wider imperial competition soon reignited warfare.
In March 1757, British forces attacked and captured Chandannagar (Chandernagore), the main French company settlement in Bengal. The loss weakened French access to Bengal’s valuable textiles and river trade. It also showed how fast company settlements could fall when they lacked naval support and strong alliances.
On January 22, 1760, British forces defeated the French under the comte de Lally at Wandiwash (Vandavasi). The battle is widely seen as the decisive turning point in the Anglo-French struggle in southern India during the Seven Years’ War. After this defeat, French forces were largely confined to defending Pondicherry.
British land and naval forces besieged Pondicherry from September 1760 until the French surrendered in January 1761. The fall of the capital of French India ended the company’s main military base on the Coromandel Coast. This defeat greatly reduced France’s ability to protect and expand its Indian Ocean trade network from India itself.
The Treaty of Paris, signed on February 10, 1763, ended major Franco-British fighting in the Seven Years’ War. In India and the East Indies, it reversed certain conquests since 1749, allowing France to regain some trading positions even after major defeats. However, France’s role was now far more limited compared with Britain’s expanding power in India.
In 1769, the French East India Company’s monopoly over French trade with India was ended. Losing exclusive rights made it harder for the company to justify large military and administrative costs, especially after wartime losses. This change marked a clear shift from a chartered monopoly model toward freer private trade.
