Royal fifth (quinto real) formalized on mining
Labels: Quinto Real, MiningThe quinto real (“royal fifth”) set a major revenue stream for the Spanish monarchy by taking a share of mineral production, especially precious metals. Although first fixed at one-fifth in early rules, it remained a core mining tax for much of the colonial period, linking New Spain’s silver economy directly to royal income. Over time, the rate and methods of collection changed, especially during later fiscal reforms.
