On June 16, 1903, Henry Ford and investors created the Ford Motor Company in Detroit. The new firm began assembling cars in rented space, setting the stage for rapid expansion and a shift toward purpose-built auto factories.
In 1904, Ford moved into the Piquette Avenue Plant, one of the company’s first purpose-built factories. The larger space supported higher output and brought more production under one roof, a key step toward the factory system that would define Detroit auto manufacturing.
On September 16, 1908, William C. Durant formed General Motors to bring multiple auto brands under one corporate umbrella. This consolidation approach helped shape Detroit’s “Big Three” era by creating a large, multi-division competitor to Ford.
On October 1, 1908, Ford completed the first production Model T at the Piquette Avenue Plant. The Model T was designed for everyday drivers and became the signature product that pushed Ford to keep expanding factories and speeding up production.
Ford’s Highland Park Plant opened on January 1, 1910, and Model T production moved there soon after. Designed by Albert Kahn, the plant became a model for modern factories, with larger floors and better light to support more machinery and workers.
On June 10, 1910, the Dodge Brothers broke ground on their large Hamtramck factory (later known as Dodge Main). The new plant helped spread auto manufacturing beyond Detroit’s core and drew thousands of workers into the region’s expanding industrial neighborhoods.
On October 7, 1913, Ford ran key Model T assembly steps on a continuously moving assembly line at Highland Park. This system reduced build time and helped lower car prices, while also making factory work more specialized and repetitive.
On January 5, 1914, Ford announced the “Five Dollar Day,” paired with an eight-hour shift for many workers. The policy aimed to reduce turnover and stabilize the workforce needed for high-speed production, and it also influenced how other firms competed for labor in Detroit.
In May 1918, Ford laid the first keel for an Eagle Boat at the River Rouge site, reflecting how the company’s factory capacity expanded during World War I. The Rouge would grow into a massive complex designed to turn raw materials into finished vehicles in one interconnected industrial system.
On June 6, 1925, Walter P. Chrysler officially formed the Chrysler Corporation by reorganizing the Maxwell Motor Corporation. Chrysler’s rise gave Detroit another large producer that could compete by offering different models and price points, strengthening the emerging “Big Three” structure.
On June 30, 1926, General Motors purchased the remaining Fisher Body stock, making Fisher a fully integrated GM division. Controlling body production helped GM coordinate styling and output across brands and supported larger-scale factory planning and investment.
On May 26, 1927, Ford marked the end of Model T production after nearly two decades, as demand shifted toward newer designs. Retooling highlighted how even highly successful factory systems had to adapt to changing markets and stronger competition from GM and Chrysler.
In 1928, Chrysler combined with Dodge Brothers, adding factories, suppliers, and a stronger dealer network. This deal expanded Chrysler’s production capacity in the Detroit area and helped solidify the Big Three as the industry’s dominant firms.
The Flint sit-down strike ran from December 30, 1936 to February 11, 1937 and ended with GM recognizing the United Auto Workers (UAW). The outcome shifted power on factory floors by strengthening collective bargaining, which shaped wages, work rules, and labor relations across Detroit auto plants.
During World War II, Chrysler’s Detroit Arsenal became a major center for mass-producing tanks, including the M4 Sherman beginning in 1942. Auto-style production methods and skilled industrial labor were redirected to wartime output, showing how Detroit’s factory system could rapidly scale for national needs.
By 1950, the Big Three’s expanded plants, supplier networks, and union contracts underpinned a high-volume consumer car market. The period left a lasting legacy: Detroit became a global symbol of large-scale factory production, but also a city increasingly tied to the cycles and risks of one dominant industry.
