The United Kingdom passed the Electric Lighting Act 1882 to regulate and encourage early electricity supply. By letting the Board of Trade authorize local suppliers, it helped create legal pathways for power networks that factories could later buy electricity from. This is a key starting point because factory electrification depended on reliable, permitted generation and wiring in towns and cities.
Pearl Street Station in Manhattan began generating electricity for customers in September 1882. It is often treated as a landmark for central-station power: instead of each site making its own power, customers could buy electricity from a utility. This approach later supported factories, which increasingly connected to public power networks instead of relying only on on-site steam engines.
In 1882, engineers transmitted direct-current electricity about 57 km from Miesbach to Munich for an exhibition. Even though the system was limited in power, it showed the promise—and difficulty—of sending electricity over distance. This problem mattered for factories because large-scale industrial electrification required dependable long-distance transmission.
At the 1891 International Electrotechnical Exhibition in Frankfurt, three-phase alternating current (AC) power was transmitted about 175 km from Lauffen am Neckar. This was a turning point because three-phase AC made long-distance transmission practical and efficient enough for broad industrial use. Stronger transmission helped electricity reach factories beyond the immediate area of a generator.
A major hydroelectric generator at the Niagara Falls Adams Station (Power Station No. 1) began operating in August 1895. Large, centralized generation like this could produce power at a scale that small factory dynamos could not match. It supported a shift toward utilities supplying electricity to many users, including heavy industry.
In November 1896, Niagara Falls hydroelectricity was transmitted over roughly twenty miles to Buffalo, New York. This kind of transmission meant factories no longer had to sit right next to waterpower or coal supplies to get large amounts of energy. It helped expand the practical geography of electrified industrial production.
Ford Motor Company used an early assembly-line method for magnetos at its Highland Park plant in April 1913. Electrified factories could use motors to drive equipment like conveyors and tools, making workflows easier to rearrange than older systems built around long belts and shafts. This event shows how electric power supported new factory layouts and faster production.
In October 1913, Ford put chassis assembly on a continuously moving assembly line at Highland Park. While the assembly-line idea was broader than electrification alone, electric motors made it easier to power conveyors and support machines in flexible ways. The result was a powerful model of electrically supported mass production that influenced factories across North America and Europe.
After World War I, the UK passed the Electricity (Supply) Act 1919, creating Electricity Commissioners to promote, regulate, and supervise electricity supply. By pushing for a "cheap and abundant" supply, the act addressed barriers that kept electricity expensive or unreliable. This strengthened the environment for factories to replace steam and mechanical transmission with electric drives.
The UK Electricity (Supply) Act 1926 received royal assent in December 1926. It laid the groundwork for selecting efficient generating stations, building main transmission lines, and standardizing frequency—steps aimed at lowering cost and improving reliability. For factories, cheaper standardized electricity made electrification a more predictable investment.
In 1927, the UK established the Central Electricity Board (CEB) to implement the 1926 reforms. The CEB coordinated selected power stations and transmission lines and pushed frequency standardization, helping regional systems work together. This coordination reduced the risk of outages and incompatibility that could shut down electrified factories.
In July 1928, the first grid tower was erected near Edinburgh as construction began on Britain’s high-voltage transmission network. Building long-distance lines helped connect large generators to industrial regions, smoothing local shortages and supporting growth in electrified production. For factory electrification, transmission was as important as motors on the shop floor.
By 1933, construction of Britain’s grid network was completed and it began operating as a set of regional grids with auxiliary interconnections. This marked a clear outcome of the 1920s reforms: large-scale, more reliable power delivery across regions. By this point, factory electrification in the UK could increasingly rely on standardized utility electricity rather than isolated local systems or on-site generation.
