The Edgar Thomson Steel Works in Braddock produced its first “heat” of steel in a Bessemer converter in August 1875, supplying rails for the Pennsylvania Railroad. The plant’s large-scale, mechanized output became a model for factory-style steel production around Pittsburgh. It helped anchor the region’s rise as a national center for heavy industry.
In August 1876, the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers was founded to organize skilled iron and steel workers. Its growth created an organized counterforce to large mills as the industry expanded. The union would play a central role in later conflicts at Carnegie’s plants, especially at Homestead.
In July 1877, wage cuts on railroads helped trigger major unrest in Pittsburgh, a key rail and industrial hub. Violence and mass stoppages showed how closely factories and transportation were linked, and it signaled rising conflict between industrial employers and workers. This set an early backdrop for later labor struggles in Pittsburgh’s steel mills.
In 1883, Andrew Carnegie purchased the Homestead Steel Works, built just two years earlier along the Monongahela River. The acquisition expanded Carnegie’s control of Pittsburgh-area production and helped him coordinate steelmaking with transportation and raw-material supplies. Homestead would later become a focal point for labor conflict and industrial modernization.
By 1886, Homestead had an open-hearth shop, a steelmaking method suited for broader products than rails, including structural shapes. This reflected a shift from a rail-centered industry toward diversified heavy industrial production. The change also increased the need for round-the-clock labor and complex factory coordination.
In 1889, Carnegie’s holdings were consolidated under the Carnegie Steel Company, strengthening a vertically integrated system. Vertical integration meant one firm controlled major steps of production—ore, coke, transport, and mills—reducing dependence on outside suppliers. This structure helped Pittsburgh steel scale up rapidly and compete nationally.
From July to November 1892, Carnegie Steel and the Amalgamated Association fought a major lockout and strike at Homestead. A violent confrontation occurred when Pinkerton agents attempted to enter the plant on July 6, and the state militia later restored company control. The defeat weakened steel union power for decades and reinforced employer control inside the factory system.
In 1895, the Carnegie Building opened in downtown Pittsburgh and served as Carnegie Steel’s headquarters. The building itself showcased steel-frame construction, linking the city’s office skyline to its mill output. It also symbolized a more centralized, corporate style of managing large factory systems spread across the river valleys.
In 1901, financier J. P. Morgan organized the merger that created United States Steel Corporation, combining Carnegie Steel with other major firms. The new company became the world’s first billion-dollar corporation, further concentrating industrial power. In the Pittsburgh region, it marked a shift from founder-led companies to large corporate management of mills and labor.
Starting in 1905, Jones and Laughlin began building a major new steel plant at Aliquippa along the Ohio River, extending the region’s heavy-industry corridor beyond Pittsburgh’s core. The new site reflects how large firms sought more space for integrated blast furnaces and mills near transport routes. This expansion helped sustain regional growth even as older urban sites became crowded.
In 1907, blast furnaces later known as Carrie Furnaces #6 and #7 were built as part of the Homestead Works system. Blast furnaces turned iron ore into molten iron, feeding larger steelmaking operations and supporting high-volume factory output. Their construction shows continued investment in Pittsburgh-area heavy industry during the early 20th century peak.
In May 1907, the Russell Sage Foundation funded the Pittsburgh Survey to study working and living conditions in a major industrial city. Investigators documented long hours, dangerous jobs, crowded housing, and other issues linked to mill work and rapid urban growth. The survey became part of Progressive Era efforts to support labor and public health reforms.
Beginning on September 22, 1919, a nationwide strike aimed to unionize U.S. Steel, including major operations in the Pittsburgh district. The strike collapsed by January 8, 1920, after strong employer opposition and political pressure during the First Red Scare. Its defeat reinforced the nonunion factory system in steel as the industry entered the 1920s.
