Garment worker uprising begins in New York
Labels: Uprising of, ILGWU, Garment workersA mass strike by mostly young immigrant women in the shirtwaist (women’s blouse) industry pushed for higher pay, shorter hours, and safer shops. The action—often called the “Uprising of the 20,000”—helped build the International Ladies’ Garment Workers’ Union (ILGWU) and made factory conditions a public issue. It set the stage for reforms that would accelerate after a major fire in 1911.
