Higher wages also mattered on the demand side by increasing workers’ ability to buy consumer goods, including cars.
Commercial Investment Trust (CIT) emerged as a large-scale finance company in the 1910s and expanded into automobile financing. These specialized lenders helped connect banks’ funds to retail installment contracts. Their growth showed that consumer durables were becoming a major arena for modern credit practices.
General Motors formed General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) to finance car distribution and customer purchases. The new captive finance company made installment buying easier for dealers and buyers, helping shift car sales away from cash-only transactions. This was an early institutional step linking mass auto production to mass credit.
By the early 1920s, installment credit had become a common way to buy cars, with research suggesting that a large share of new-car sales relied on credit. This change helped automakers and dealers move more vehicles by spreading payments over time. It also tied household budgets more closely to monthly debt payments and repossession risk.
GMAC’s rapid growth helped make structured time-payment plans part of routine auto sales operations, not an exception. Financing practices spread through dealer networks, shaping how sales were organized and how risk was managed. This supported a consumer economy in which durable goods purchases increasingly depended on credit.
Ford debuted the Model A in December 1927 after years of Model T production, responding to competition and shifting consumer expectations. The launch drew intense public attention and required major plant retooling. The transition highlighted how mass production increasingly depended on maintaining demand—often supported by financing.
Ford established Universal Credit Corporation in partnership with Detroit’s Union Guardian Trust Company to support retail car financing. The move was widely understood as a response to competitors’ financing arms, especially GMAC. It marked a major shift for Ford toward accepting installment credit as part of selling cars at scale.
By 1930, installment credit had grown into a major part of consumer finance, and automobiles accounted for a large share of outstanding installment debt. This structure helped sustain mass production by keeping purchases flowing even when households lacked full cash up front. It also made consumers and manufacturers more vulnerable when incomes fell or credit tightened.
In 1932, Henry Ford sold Universal Credit Corporation for $50 million amid severe financial pressures during the Great Depression. The sale showed how closely auto demand, production finance, and consumer credit had become connected—and how fragile that system could be in a banking crisis. UCC continued operating as a financer for Ford dealers and customers under new ownership.
The National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) aimed to stabilize industry through codes covering wages, hours, and competition rules, alongside public works spending. For mass-production sectors, it reflected a policy effort to sustain purchasing power and employment during collapse. Although later struck down, it showed the growing role of government in managing industrial capitalism and demand.
The National Labor Relations Act (Wagner Act) protected workers’ rights to organize and required employers to bargain with certified unions. In mass-production industries, it helped shift workplace power and supported more stable wage-setting. Over time, these labor rules influenced the balance between productivity gains, pay, and consumer purchasing power.
The Fair Labor Standards Act set a federal minimum wage, overtime rules for long workweeks, and restrictions on oppressive child labor. These standards reinforced the idea that mass production should be paired with baseline labor protections. By the late 1930s, the Fordist promise of high output and mass consumption increasingly rested on both consumer credit and federal labor regulation.
By the end of the 1930s, auto installment finance had become a standard feature of the U.S. consumer economy, used to move high-volume durable goods. This helped sustain large-scale industrial production, but it also left demand sensitive to employment, incomes, and access to credit.
