Henry Ford purchased a large tract of land in Highland Park, Michigan to build a new, purpose-designed plant. The goal was to expand beyond the crowded Piquette Avenue factory and increase Model T output. This decision set the stage for a major shift from craft-style assembly toward more organized, high-volume production.
Construction started on what would become a major industrial complex designed by architect Albert Kahn. The buildings used large areas of glass and open floor space, which improved lighting and made it easier to lay out machines and workflows. The site’s design mattered because Ford’s later assembly-line experiments depended on moving parts and people efficiently through the factory.
Ford shifted vehicle production from the Piquette Avenue plant to the new Highland Park plant. This move provided more space and a modern layout, enabling higher production volumes. It also created the physical conditions needed for experimenting with new assembly methods.
The Highland Park plant opened as a major new Ford manufacturing center, with capacity and infrastructure beyond earlier Ford facilities. The growing complex included multiple functions (such as power and foundry operations), supporting Ford’s push toward more integrated, in-house manufacturing. This broader setup helped reduce delays and made production more predictable at scale.
In 1913, Ford first tried a moving-line approach on a key component: the flywheel magneto (part of the ignition system). The work was broken into many small steps, with the partly assembled unit moving from worker to worker. This experiment showed that splitting tasks and controlling pace could cut assembly time and standardize output.
By mid-1913, Ford’s Highland Park workers were assembling chassis with each frame staying in one place while parts were brought to it. Reports from the period describe this method as requiring long labor time per chassis, revealing a bottleneck. The problem pushed Ford managers and engineers to test ways of moving the work to the workers instead.
Ford experimented with pulling a chassis along the floor using a rope and windlass past workers and parts piles. Even this rough setup reduced labor time per chassis compared with stationary assembly. The trial demonstrated that the main idea—continuous flow—could work for automobile frames, not just smaller components.
On this date, the moving assembly line for chassis assembly began operating at Highland Park, a milestone often cited as the first full moving line for automobile chassis production. A line of workers performed repeated, standardized tasks as the chassis moved through the factory. This change sharply increased throughput and became a core practice of what later came to be called Fordism.
After the moving line proved workable, Ford intensified task subdivision so each station had a narrow, repeatable job. The line’s pace became something management could measure and adjust, turning time-and-motion ideas into daily practice. This raised productivity but also made jobs more repetitive, which affected worker satisfaction and turnover.
Ford publicly announced a new pay plan tied to an eight-hour day and a five-dollar daily wage level for many workers, starting shortly afterward. The policy aimed to reduce extremely high turnover and stabilize the labor force needed for fast, standardized assembly-line work. It became one of the most famous labor policies associated with Fordism.
The new pay plan began to take effect for Highland Park workers, reinforcing Ford’s strategy of pairing high output with relatively high wages. In practice, the plan included rules and oversight intended to shape worker behavior as well as improve attendance and retention. With a more stable workforce, Ford could sustain the disciplined, high-speed flow required by the moving assembly line.
By the mid-1910s, Highland Park’s system—continuous flow, specialized tasks, controlled pacing, and large-scale output—was influencing industrial production beyond Ford. The plant demonstrated that process design could reduce unit costs and support mass markets, helping define modern industrial production practices. In this period, Highland Park’s assembly-line innovations became widely recognized as a turning point in manufacturing history.
