At Highland Park, Ford ran chassis assembly on a continuously moving line, bringing work to stationary workers instead of having workers move around a fixed car frame. This cut labor time per car and made it practical to lower prices while expanding output.
Ford announced a new pay system tied to an eight-hour day, which was widely described as a $5 minimum daily wage for eligible workers. The policy aimed to reduce turnover and stabilize a workforce needed for demanding assembly-line jobs, while also enabling three shifts per day.
As prices fell and production climbed, the Model T became a dominant product in the U.S. auto market. Studies of the period show Ford reaching an exceptionally large share of the passenger-car stock, demonstrating how standardized mass production could translate into market power.
Ford began building the River Rouge complex, aiming to concentrate many steps of production—such as receiving raw materials and making components—within one vast industrial site. This move extended Fordism beyond the assembly line toward tighter control of supply and throughput.
By the early 1920s, research and contemporary reporting describe the Model T as a global-scale product, with high production volumes and significant market share in cars and trucks. This reinforced the Fordist pattern: standardized design, high throughput, and prices pushed downward through efficiency.

As competitors offered more styling choices and frequent updates, demand for the aging Model T weakened. Ford announced it would discontinue the Model T, signaling a major transition away from a single dominant product toward a replacement model and retooled factories.
Ford built and drove the 15 millionth Model T as production officially ended, closing a long run that began in 1908. The Model T’s lifecycle became a central case study of Fordism: standardized product design, moving-line production, lower prices, and a mass consumer market shaped by industrial scale.
