By January 1910, Ford Motor Company moved most automobile production from the Piquette Avenue plant in Detroit to the larger Highland Park plant. In April 1913, Ford began assembling flywheel magnetos (an electrical generator for ignition) on a crude moving line. On October 7, 1913, Ford put the Model T chassis (the vehicle frame) onto a continuously moving line at Highland Park. A rope-and-winch setup pulled the chassis past workers and parts, cutting the time needed for major assembly steps. After the chassis line proved workable, Ford extended moving-line ideas to other major Model T components such as engines and transmissions. On January 5, 1914, Ford announced a major wage policy often called the “Five-Dollar Day,” paired with an eight-hour shift. The higher pay helped Ford stabilize its workforce during a period when fast-paced, standardized line work drove high turnover. More stable staffing made it easier to maintain consistent process timing and quality on moving lines.
By April 1914, three parallel chassis assembly lines were operating at Highland Park, showing how conveyors and standardized stations could be duplicated to raise output. Rather than one “master line,” Ford treated the assembly line as a scalable design that could be replicated. This reinforced the need for interchangeable parts and standardized tools across lines.
Continuous improvements to conveyor flow and task design reduced the Model T’s assembly time dramatically; accounts commonly cite 93 minutes by 1914. Faster assembly depended on parts that fit consistently without custom filing or reshaping at each station. The result was a manufacturing system that linked engineering tolerances (how precisely parts are made) to daily production speed.
In 1915, Henry Ford purchased land that would become the River Rouge complex, later shifting plans toward large-scale manufacturing. This step reflected a new phase: not just assembling cars quickly, but controlling upstream materials and component production to feed standardized lines. It was an organizational expansion that aimed to reduce supply disruptions and variability.
From 1917 to 1928, Ford developed the River Rouge complex into a vast, vertically integrated site (meaning many steps—from raw materials to finished vehicles—occurred in one complex). This supported standardized high-volume production by synchronizing inputs like steel, glass, and power with assembly needs. On May 26, 1927, Ford marked the end of Model T production as the 15 millionth car was driven out, signaling that the long-running product and its mature production system had reached a turning point. Stopping the Model T freed Ford to retool machinery and conveyors for a new model. The change shows how standardization can enable scale—but also make it harder to pivot quickly when markets shift.
In December 1927, Ford introduced the Model A, assembled at the Rouge and supported by newly installed assembly-line equipment.
