On this day, workers at the Gdańsk Lenin Shipyard began a strike that quickly became a wider protest against poor living conditions and lack of independent worker representation. The strike created the opening for a national labor movement to form around clear demands and disciplined organization.
As the strike spread beyond one workplace, activists created the Inter-Factory (Inter-Enterprise) Strike Committee (MKS) to coordinate actions across many worksites. This mattered because it turned separate workplace disputes into a unified negotiation effort, making it harder for the state to isolate the strikers.
The MKS issued a list of 21 demands that combined workplace issues with broader civil and union rights, including the right to form independent unions. Publishing a clear set of demands helped Solidarity become more than a protest—it became a structured movement with goals that could be negotiated and measured.
The Polish government signed the Gdańsk Agreement with the striking workers, accepting key demands and opening the way for an independent trade union to exist. This was a turning point because it created the first state-recognized independent union in the Soviet-led Eastern Bloc, giving workers a legal foothold for organizing.
Representatives from many workplaces and regions merged their founding committees into a single national organization: NSZZ “Solidarność.” This consolidation helped the movement act nationwide, coordinate strategy, and speak with one voice in talks with the communist state.
After legal disputes over the union’s statutes, Solidarity was formally registered, giving it recognized legal standing. Registration mattered because it allowed open organizing and membership growth on a scale rarely seen under communist rule.
Solidarity held its first national congress of delegates, a major step in building an internal democratic structure for a mass union. The congress also showed the movement’s reach—Solidarity had become a nationwide organization rather than a single-city strike committee.
General Wojciech Jaruzelski’s government imposed martial law, using arrests, censorship, and bans on strikes and public gatherings to break the movement. This shifted Solidarity from a legal mass union into an underground network, while the state tried to reassert control over workplaces and public life.
The authorities suspended martial law nationwide, signaling a shift from direct military-style rule to other forms of political control. Even with suspension, many restrictions and pressures on opposition activity continued, and Solidarity remained illegal.
Poland officially ended martial law, along with an amnesty that freed many prisoners, but the state kept tools to restrict dissident activity. For Solidarity, this marked the end of the most intense crackdown phase, but not the return of legal union pluralism.
Jerzy Popiełuszko, a Catholic priest closely associated with Solidarity, was kidnapped and killed by officers of Poland’s Security Service. The killing intensified public anger and weakened the government’s credibility, while highlighting the risks faced by people linked to the opposition.
The authorities moved to release remaining political prisoners, including key opposition figures, as part of a wider effort to reduce tensions and improve relations at home and abroad. This step helped create conditions for later negotiations by bringing more Solidarity-linked activists back into public life.
Representatives of the communist government and the Solidarity-led opposition began formal negotiations known as the Round Table Talks. The talks mattered because they shifted the conflict from street-level confrontation to bargaining over reforms, including rules for elections and union rights.
The Round Table talks concluded with an agreement that included re-legalizing Solidarity and creating partially competitive parliamentary elections (often called “semi-free” elections). This was a negotiated route away from one-party rule, even though many seats were still reserved for the ruling party and its allies.
A Polish court formally registered Solidarity again, ending years of illegal status after the martial-law crackdown. Legal recognition allowed the union to organize openly and compete politically in the election system created by the Round Table Agreement.
In Poland’s June elections, Solidarity-backed candidates won nearly all seats they were allowed to contest, including 99 of 100 Senate seats. The results showed broad public support and broke the expectation that the ruling party could tightly manage political outcomes.
After negotiations in parliament, Tadeusz Mazowiecki—a Solidarity adviser and public intellectual—won confirmation as prime minister. His appointment marked a clear outcome of the 1980–1989 workers’ rights struggle: Poland formed a government not dominated by communists, accelerating a peaceful transition toward democratic politics and independent labor organizing.
