English settlers established a permanent colony at what became Holetown, Barbados. Among the newcomers were indentured laborers whose time-limited contracts were used to supply plantation labor in the colony’s early years. This settlement created the political and economic base for later plantation expansion.
Barbados held the first meeting of its House of Assembly, giving planters and property owners a local legislature. This institution helped write and enforce labor rules that shaped plantation society. Over time, it played a major role in regulating both indentured servitude and slavery.
In the 1640s, Barbados rapidly shifted toward sugar cultivation and sugar-processing infrastructure, often called the “Sugar Revolution.” Sugar production required large investments and intensive labor, which increased demand for coerced workers. This shift began to squeeze out many small farmers and made plantation labor systems more central to the island’s economy.
English forces seized Jamaica during Cromwell’s Western Design, bringing the island under English occupation. Early English Jamaica struggled with insecurity and labor shortages, so colonial leaders relied on a mix of forced labor systems while trying to build a plantation economy. Over time, sugar cultivation would become central to Jamaica’s growth.
Barbados passed a “Master and Servant” law to define rules, punishments, and obligations for indentured servants and their employers. In practice, these laws gave masters strong control over workers’ movement and discipline. The code shows how the colony used legislation to manage a workforce that was legally unfree, even when not enslaved for life.
Barbados enacted “An Act for the better ordering and governing of Negroes,” a wide-ranging law to regulate slavery. This legal framework treated enslaved people as property and supported harsh enforcement against runaways and resistance. It helped entrench racialized, hereditary slavery alongside (and increasingly instead of) indentured servitude.
Jamaica adopted a law titled “An Act for the good Governing of Servants & ordering Rights betweene Masters & Servants.” The act shows that, alongside slavery, the colony used indentured and contracted labor and needed legal tools to discipline and control it. These rules helped planters enforce work regimes on plantations and in other colonial workplaces.
The Treaty of Madrid ended major Anglo-Spanish conflict in the Caribbean and included Spain’s recognition of English-held territories in the Americas. This diplomatic recognition helped secure Jamaica as an English colony. With Jamaica’s status more settled, investors and planters had stronger incentives to expand plantation production, including sugar.
During the 1700s, Jamaica’s economy shifted decisively toward large-scale sugar plantations worked mainly by enslaved Africans. As sugar spread across the island, plantation labor became more regimented and violent, and the enslaved population grew dramatically. The island became one of Britain’s most valuable sugar colonies, tying Caribbean production to Atlantic trade and finance.
Parliament passed the Molasses Act, taxing molasses, sugar, and rum imported into North American colonies from non-British Caribbean producers. The law was designed to favor British West Indian planters by discouraging cheaper foreign sugar products. Even though smuggling often undermined enforcement, it shows how imperial policy sought to support Caribbean sugar profits.
A major uprising known as Tacky’s Revolt began in Jamaica and targeted forts and plantations, including sugar estates. The revolt reflected the extreme coercion of plantation labor and the ongoing resistance of enslaved people. Colonial authorities responded with military force and harsh repression, reinforcing plantation security and surveillance.
In late December 1831, an uprising (the Baptist War/Christmas Rebellion) began with actions linked to plantation labor conditions and expectations about emancipation. It spread across sugar-growing areas and involved tens of thousands of enslaved people. The revolt was suppressed, but it intensified political pressure in Britain to end slavery in the colonies.
The Slavery Abolition Act (passed in 1833) took effect on 1 August 1834, ending slavery in most of the British Empire but replacing it with an “apprenticeship” system for many formerly enslaved people. Apprenticeship required continued labor for former owners for a set period, limiting true freedom. This transition reshaped plantation labor arrangements in Barbados and Jamaica at the end of the period covered by this timeline.
