The Colony of Natal adopted a set of immigration and labor-control laws (including Law 14 of 1859) to make it legal to import Indian workers on fixed contracts. These rules set terms like five-year service, assigned employers, and oversight by colonial officials, creating the framework for indenture in Natal.
The ship Truro arrived at Port Natal (Durban) with 342 indentured immigrants from Madras, marking the start of large-scale Indian indentured labor in Natal. Most were recruited to work in the developing sugar economy, beginning a migration stream that would last more than 50 years.
A second ship, Belvedere, arrived soon after Truro with another large group of Indian immigrants, this time from Calcutta. Early arrivals were assigned to employers through colonial systems that tightly controlled movement, work, and discipline.
After the first landings, Natal continued importing Indian workers in growing numbers to meet plantation labor needs. Over time, indenture became central to Natal’s sugar production, reshaping the colony’s workforce and demographics.
Natal passed Law 20 of 1874, associated with the Indian Immigration Trust Board, to manage recruitment, employment, repatriation, and welfare within the indenture system. This helped turn indenture into a stable, state-administered labor pipeline rather than an ad hoc arrangement.
Mohandas K. Gandhi came to Natal as a lawyer, entering a colony where Indian workers and traders faced widening discrimination. His experiences in Natal would connect indentured labor issues to broader political organizing for Indian rights.
Gandhi helped establish the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) to oppose discriminatory laws affecting Indians in Natal. The NIC used petitions and public advocacy, creating a more organized political voice that linked merchants’ concerns with the wider Indian community’s status.
After Gandhi returned to Durban, he was assaulted by a European mob, reflecting intense anti-Indian sentiment in the colony. The incident became a widely cited example of racial hostility and helped galvanize political action around Indian civil rights.
Although centered in the Transvaal, the Asiatic registration controversy helped spread the idea of coordinated Indian protest in South Africa. Campaign timelines highlight deadlines, arrests, and negotiations that influenced later forms of organized resistance, including among Natal-linked Indian networks.
In the Imperial Legislative Council in India, Gopal Krishna Gokhale introduced a move to stop the export of indentured labor to Natal. This signaled that opposition to Natal indenture had become a high-level political issue in India, not only a colonial labor policy question in South Africa.
By 1911, indentured labor migration from India to Natal was prohibited, effectively ending the system’s recruitment pipeline. The end of indenture closed one era of coerced contract labor while leaving a lasting legacy: a large South African Indian community shaped by plantation labor, settlement, and long struggles over rights.
The ship Umlazi arrived in Natal as the final vessel bringing Indian indentured immigrants under the scheme. Its arrival is commonly used as a clear endpoint marker for Natal’s ship-based indenture recruitment.
