In the early 1800s, coffee cultivation spread from coastal areas into the interior of southeastern Brazil, especially the province of Rio de Janeiro. Planters increased production by relying heavily on enslaved labor and by acquiring more land. This set the stage for coffee to become the country’s most important export crop later in the century.
Brazil declared independence from Portugal in 1822 and kept a monarchy, but slavery remained legal and central to plantation production. The growing coffee economy depended on enslaved workers for clearing forests, planting, harvesting, and processing beans. Independence did not change the basic labor system on large estates.
In 1831, Brazil passed a law declaring that newly imported Africans would be free and prohibiting the transatlantic slave trade. In practice, illegal trafficking continued for years, so the coffee economy still drew on enslaved people brought from Africa. The gap between law and enforcement helped slavery persist even as coffee production expanded.
On January 25, 1835, enslaved and freed African Muslims organized an uprising in Salvador, Bahia (the Malê Revolt). Although it was defeated, the revolt showed that enslaved people resisted violently as well as through escape and everyday acts of defiance. Elite fears of rebellion shaped later debates about controlling slavery and labor.
By the 1840s, Brazil had become the largest coffee producer in the world, and coffee had become the country’s leading export. This growth was closely tied to enslaved labor on large plantations in Rio de Janeiro and nearby regions. Profits from coffee strengthened planter influence over politics and helped keep slavery entrenched.
In 1845, the United Kingdom passed the Aberdeen Act, authorizing British forces to seize Brazilian ships suspected of carrying enslaved Africans. This increased international pressure on Brazil to end the transatlantic trade. It also helped push Brazil toward stronger domestic enforcement in the next decade.
In 1850, Brazil enacted the Eusébio de Queirós Law, making the importation of enslaved Africans illegal and creating measures to suppress the trade. While slavery itself continued, planters increasingly turned to the internal slave trade—moving enslaved people from other regions—to supply labor for coffee areas. The law marked a major turning point in how the coffee economy obtained workers.
Later in 1850, Brazil’s Land Law (Lei de Terras) made purchase the main legal path to acquire public land, limiting access for poor and newly arriving workers. This mattered as the coffee economy began to face labor shortages without new enslaved Africans entering legally. The policy supported large estates and made it harder for freed or free workers to become small farmers.
In 1871, Brazil passed the Rio Branco Law (Law of Free Birth), declaring that children born to enslaved women after the law would be legally free. However, the law allowed slaveholders to keep these children working until adulthood, so plantation labor changed slowly. Still, it signaled that the legal foundations of slavery were beginning to weaken.
In 1880, leading abolitionists helped create the Sociedade Brasileira Contra a Escravidão (Brazilian Anti-Slavery Society). The group helped coordinate public campaigning, political pressure, and debate about how and when slavery should end. This organizing mattered because it widened abolitionism beyond elite politics and increased pressure on lawmakers.
In 1885, the Saraiva-Cotegipe Law (Sexagenarian Law) granted freedom to enslaved people aged 60 or older, though it included conditions and had limited practical effect. Even so, it showed that gradual emancipation policies were advancing under growing political pressure. It also increased planter anxiety about losing labor on coffee estates.
On May 13, 1888, the Lei Áurea (Golden Law) abolished slavery in Brazil, ending legal ownership of people without compensation to slaveholders. Roughly hundreds of thousands of enslaved people were freed, but the law did not provide land, wages, or social support for the newly free. The end of slavery forced the coffee economy to rely more on free labor arrangements and, increasingly, immigration.
On November 15, 1889, a military coup proclaimed the Republic and ended Brazil’s monarchy. One major source of elite resentment was the lack of compensation after abolition, which weakened the monarchy’s support among slaveholding and plantation interests tied to coffee. The political shift closed this period by showing how deeply slavery and the coffee economy were connected to state power.
