Archaeological work at Hepu has found evidence of port activity and long-distance goods linked to Han-period burials and coastal facilities. Finds interpreted as non-local imports suggest that ships were already moving people and commodities through the South China Sea network. This physical evidence supports the idea that early Chinese maritime contacts were not only written about but also practiced at scale.
In 166 CE, the Hou Han Shu reports that envoys from “Da Qin” (commonly identified with the Roman Empire) arrived via the southern frontier commandery of Rinan (in today’s central Vietnam). The record shows that maritime routes through Southeast Asia could connect China’s southern borderlands to Indian Ocean trade circuits. Even if the envoys were intermediaries rather than official Roman diplomats, the episode reflects how sea-borne commerce carried high-status gifts and information.
By the early centuries CE, Chinese sources describe Funan (a powerful polity in the Mekong region) as a place where foreign merchants gathered and where long-distance trade passed through. This mattered because Southeast Asian ports acted as “connectors” between China and the wider Indian Ocean, including routes toward India and West Asia. The pattern helped make maritime exchange more regular than occasional diplomatic voyages.
After the Tang dynasty began in 618, China reunified and stabilized large parts of East Asia. This stability encouraged merchants—Chinese and foreign—to invest in long voyages that depended on predictable taxation and security. Tang-era maritime trade increasingly linked southern China’s ports to Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, expanding the scale of earlier Han-period contacts.
In 758 CE, Arab and Persian attackers raided Guangzhou, plundering and burning storehouses before leaving by sea. The incident shows how important Guangzhou had become as a maritime hub—and how valuable its warehousing and customs trade could be to outsiders. It also highlights the risks of concentrating wealth and foreign communities in major port cities.
In 760 CE, forces under Tian Shengong killed thousands of foreign merchants in Yangzhou during the turmoil surrounding the An Lushan Rebellion era. Although Yangzhou is inland on the Grand Canal, the attack shows how maritime-linked merchant wealth could be targeted even away from the coast. The event likely discouraged some travel and raised the cost of doing business by increasing perceived risk.
Despite episodes of violence, evidence indicates that West Asian merchant communities persisted in China during the late Tang, especially in major maritime centers like Guangzhou. These communities helped organize shipping, credit, and the flow of luxury goods (such as aromatics and gemstones) and mass commodities (like ceramics). Their presence made Chinese–Indian Ocean exchange more continuous, not just diplomatic or occasional.
One bowl in the Belitung cargo bears a date corresponding to 826 CE, helping confirm the broader dating of the wreck and its trade context. This kind of “time-stamp” matters because it ties the artifacts to a specific moment in Tang commercial history. It also supports the idea that export ceramics were produced in large batches and moved rapidly into maritime distribution networks.
A sewn-plank Arabian dhow sank around 830 CE near Belitung Island (Indonesia) while carrying a huge cargo of Tang goods on a return voyage from China. The wreck included tens of thousands of Chinese ceramics and other items, demonstrating large-scale manufacturing for overseas buyers and the use of Southeast Asian waters as a key transit zone. It is strong archaeological proof that China was deeply integrated into Indian Ocean trade by the 9th century.
In 879 CE, the rebel leader Huang Chao occupied Guangzhou, a key international trading city. Contemporary and later accounts describe a massacre that included many foreign residents and merchants, marking a major disruption to the port’s commercial community. The event illustrates how political breakdown could quickly damage long-distance trade networks that depended on safe, stable ports.
By the late 9th century, repeated violence and rebellion reduced the security that maritime merchants needed to operate. Guangzhou’s shocks in 758 and 879, along with broader Tang political decline, show how quickly a trade system can contract when protection and governance fail. Chinese maritime contact with the Indian Ocean did not end, but the Han–Tang phase closes with a clear lesson: long-distance sea trade depends on both ships and stable states.
