Around the mid-1st century CE, the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea recorded trading opportunities along the western Indian Ocean, including the East African coast often called Azania. It describes coastal markets and the movement of goods such as ivory and tortoise shell, showing that maritime commerce reached East Africa well before the Swahili town-building period.
Over the first millennium CE, Bantu-speaking communities on or near the East African coast developed Sabaki languages, including early forms that scholars describe as Proto-Swahili. This mattered because a shared coastal language helped trade, intermarriage, and cultural exchange connect multiple settlements into a recognizable Swahili-speaking zone.
Archaeological syntheses for Zanzibar indicate that consistent settlement becomes clearly traceable from about the 7th century CE. These communities used ceramics often grouped as ‘Tana Tradition’ and show early ties to long-distance maritime trade, including imported items such as ceramics and glass beads.
By roughly the 7th–10th centuries CE, Unguja Ukuu on Zanzibar emerged as a major early coastal settlement with evidence of long-distance trade. Finds reported in archaeological literature include imported ceramics and beads, indicating regular exchange with regions across the Indian Ocean as well as inland connections.
Excavations at Shanga (Pate Island, Kenya) indicate a Swahili community by the 8th century, with material evidence such as pottery, beads, and coins. Shanga is important because it provides some of the clearest archaeological layers for studying how early trading settlements formed on the coast.
At Shanga, excavations beneath later mosque structures indicate an early mosque phase dating to around the 8th–9th centuries CE (based on radiocarbon evidence reported in summaries of the site). Early mosques mattered because they show that some coastal communities were adopting Islam while also remaining rooted in local African languages and lifeways.
Archaeological dating places the beginnings of settlement at Kilwa Kisiwani around the start of the 9th century CE. Its location on an island with access to sheltered waters made it well-suited to become a port linking inland African products with Indian Ocean shipping.
By the 9th–10th centuries CE, multiple coastal settlements show steady flows of imported ceramics, glass, and beads from across the Indian Ocean. These imports indicate that towns were not isolated villages: they were plugged into regular exchange systems that helped support specialized crafts, local markets, and social leaders tied to trade.
As coastal demand grew for products like ivory and (later) gold, Swahili settlements increasingly depended on exchange with inland communities and caravan routes. This helped towns become stable “middle points” where inland goods could be assembled for export and foreign goods could be redistributed inland.
Around the turn of the 11th century, parts of the Swahili coast began to shift from mainly earth-and-timber structures to more durable coral-stone construction in key buildings. This architectural change matters because it signals growing wealth, long-term settlement planning, and the rise of recognizable stone-town urban forms.
By the end of the 10th century (and accelerating into the 11th), a chain of Swahili towns had formed along the coast, sharing language traditions, trade practices, and increasing Islamic influence.
