Greek navigator Eudoxus of Cyzicus is reported (via later writers such as Strabo) to have sailed from Roman-era Egypt to India using the monsoon wind system. This story is important because it shows that open-sea crossings across the Arabian Sea were becoming practical before Rome took over Egypt. Later Roman–India maritime trade built on this knowledge of seasonal winds and sea lanes.
After Octavian (Augustus) took Egypt, the Roman state gained direct control over the Nile valley and the desert routes leading to Red Sea ports. This made it easier to organize security, taxation, and transport for long-distance commerce. Egypt became the main launching point for regular maritime trade from the Roman world to India.
The geographer Strabo wrote that, by the time of Augustus, as many as 120 ships a year sailed from Myos Hormos toward India. Even if the exact number is debated, the claim signals a major rise in the scale and confidence of the route. It also highlights how Roman-controlled Egypt became a hub for Indian Ocean commerce.
The Periplus of the Erythraean Sea (most often dated to the mid-1st century CE) gives a practical guide to ports, products, and sailing conditions from the Red Sea to India. It names major markets and describes goods like pepper, textiles, gemstones, and metals, showing an organized commercial geography. As a near-contemporary handbook, it is one of the best snapshots of how the route worked in practice.
Pliny the Elder described the standard trip from Alexandria up the Nile to Coptos, then across the Eastern Desert by camel to Red Sea ports, and finally by sea to India. He also complained about the scale of Roman spending on luxury imports, illustrating official anxiety about outflows of gold and silver. His account links the sea route to its crucial land-and-river logistics inside Roman Egypt.
A Greek inscription known as the Coptos Tariff lists fees for people, animals, and services using the desert road system connecting the Nile to Red Sea ports. This shows the trade was large enough to require standardized charges and funded infrastructure such as guarded watering stations (hydreumata). It also reflects how the Roman state turned movement and security into predictable revenue.
Archaeology at Berenike, a key Red Sea harbor, has produced strong evidence of regular contact with India, including imported materials and maritime equipment. Studies of finds such as textile and sail fragments support the idea that ships and crews moved through a shared Mediterranean–Indian Ocean system. This physical evidence helps confirm what the written sources describe.
The Rabatak inscription is linked to the Kushan emperor Kanishka and is widely placed in the 2nd century CE, with scholarship tying the start of the Kushan era to 127/128 CE. Kushan power across parts of northern India and Central Asia mattered for Roman–India maritime trade because it influenced inland routes, markets, and coin flows connected to coastal exchange. This period also corresponds with heavy movement of Roman precious metal into South Asia, visible in coin finds and monetary history discussions.
In 137 CE, the Via Hadriana (also called the via nova Hadriana) was finished, linking Antinoöpolis on the Nile to Berenike on the Red Sea. The road strengthened connections between the river system and the maritime ports, supporting travel, security, and supply in the Eastern Desert. It reflects continued imperial investment in the infrastructure that underpinned Indian Ocean commerce.
The "Muziris Papyrus" (P.Vindob. G 40822) preserves part of a maritime loan contract tied to shipping Indian Ocean goods through the Red Sea route toward Alexandria. It shows the legal and financial tools used to manage risk and move expensive cargo over long distances. The document is a rare, detailed window into the business side of Roman–India maritime trade beyond travel descriptions.
Many Roman coin finds and hoards in South India (especially gold and silver) are associated with the 1st–2nd centuries CE, matching the period when written sources portray heavy trade in spices and luxury goods. These finds suggest sustained inflows of Roman precious metal, whether as payment, bullion, or reused coinage. Together with port and ship evidence, the coins help trace the intensity of the trade network on the Indian side.
In the 3rd century CE, the Roman Empire faced repeated civil wars, invasions, and major monetary instability, often called the Crisis of the Third Century. These conditions made long-distance commerce harder by disrupting security, state capacity, and the reliability of coinage used in international exchange. Roman–India maritime trade did not end immediately, but its earlier peak became difficult to sustain under these pressures.
By the 3rd century CE, the kingdom of Aksum (in today’s northern Ethiopia and Eritrea) became a leading market and trading empire in northeastern Africa. Its growing influence over Red Sea routes affected how goods and merchants moved between the Mediterranean, Arabia, and India. A Late Antique original behind the Tabula Peutingeriana (surviving as a medieval copy) includes India and marks Muziris with a "Temple of Augustus." Even though the surviving copy is later, the map tradition shows that Roman-era geographers and administrators remembered Indian Ocean connections as part of a wider network. This serves as a "legacy" endpoint: the trade routes shaped how Romans imagined and recorded the world beyond the empire.
