In 751, Abbasid-aligned forces defeated a Tang army near the Talas River, in a struggle tied to influence in Transoxiana (lands beyond the Oxus/Amu Darya). The battle did not instantly remake the region, but it marked a turning point: Tang military reach in Central Asia became harder to sustain, while Abbasid influence gained leverage among local rulers and allies.
The An Lushan Rebellion (755–763) became a major civil war inside the Tang Empire. As Tang forces were pulled back to fight in China’s heartland, garrisons and protectorates in the Western Regions became less supported, creating openings for rival powers to press into Central Asia’s trade corridors.
The Uyghur Khaganate (744–840) rose north of the Tarim and became a decisive steppe power. Its relationship with the Tang included military support during the An Lushan conflict and large silk payments, linking steppe politics directly to trade flows; Uyghur influence also affected how merchants and caravans moved between China and Central Asia.
In late 763, Tibetan forces briefly entered and captured Chang’an, the Tang capital, showing how far Tang authority had been shaken by internal war. This moment mattered for Central Asia because it signaled that Tibet could challenge Tang power across the broader frontier system that supported Silk Road garrisons.
In the years after Talas, Turkic Karluk groups strengthened their position in the Semirechye/Jetysu region (around the Chu and Talas valleys). By 766, Karluk leaders had taken key towns such as Suyab and Taraz, building a Karluk-led polity that shaped security and toll-taking along eastern Silk Road routes.
Over the late 8th century, Tibetan pressure increased on the Tarim Basin oasis states and Tang outposts. By the 790s, Tang’s remaining Anxi/Beiting frontier positions were defeated or cut off, ending a long period of Tang influence in much of the Tarim Basin and reshaping control of key Silk Road oasis routes.
Beginning in 819, the Samanid family received governorships in Transoxiana and nearby regions as rewards for loyalty to the Abbasids. These appointments signaled a shift toward Iranian-led local dynasties administering frontier cities such as Samarkand, which were central nodes on Silk Road networks.
In 821, the Tahirid dynasty began ruling Khurasan as Abbasid-appointed governors with substantial local independence. This mattered for Central Asian politics because Khurasan was the main base for projecting power into Transoxiana and for managing the tax and security systems that supported long-distance trade.
By the mid-to-late 9th century, the Saffarids expanded out of Sistan into eastern Iran and threatened older power arrangements in Khurasan. Their expansion intensified competition for the tax base and caravan cities that connected Iran, Transoxiana, and the steppe, setting the stage for a Samanid bid for wider rule.
In 892, Isma'il ibn Ahmad became the leading Samanid ruler and made Bukhara the capital, consolidating authority in Transoxiana. A stronger central court improved the ability to police routes, mint coin, and sponsor urban growth—factors that helped stabilize trade across Silk Road connections into the Islamic world.
In 900, Samanid forces defeated the Saffarids at Balkh and captured the Saffarid ruler, giving the Samanids control over Khurasan as well as Transoxiana. This created a major, relatively stable power across the eastern Iranian world, strengthening the political framework that supported commerce between Central Asia, Iran, and beyond.
By the 9th century’s end and into the 10th century, Samanid dirhams (silver coins) circulated far beyond Central Asia, moving north through Volga trade routes. This coin flow shows how Central Asian political consolidation helped power long-distance exchange networks—connecting Silk Road production and markets with the Rus’ and Baltic trade spheres.
