The result helped lock in a long-running frontier between Mamluk-controlled Syria/Egypt and Mongol-held Iraq/Iran. This political divide shaped which Silk Road branches were safe, taxed, or disrupted in the following decades.
Ilkhan Ghazan converted to Islam and made Islam a major element of Ilkhanid state policy. Even so, the Ilkhanate continued its strategic rivalry with the Mamluks, especially over Syria and the revenue from caravan routes and key cities. The conversion changed the political language of the conflict but did not end competition over trade corridors.

The Ilkhanid siege of the fortress of al-Rahba ended in a Mamluk victory. It is commonly treated as the last major military episode of the Mamluk–Ilkhanid war cycle before diplomacy gained traction. Under Ilkhan Abu Sa'id, the Ilkhanate and the Mamluk Sultanate ratified a peace settlement (often linked with Aleppo diplomacy) around 1322–1323. The agreement reduced the risk of major war across Syria and northern Mesopotamia, improving the predictability of caravan movement. More predictable security generally lowered transaction costs such as guard hire, detours, and wartime toll spikes.
Abu Sa'id died without a clear successor, and central Ilkhanid authority quickly weakened. Fragmentation meant more local rulers, shifting tax demands, and less uniform protection for long-distance merchants. This made parts of the overland Silk Road through Iran and Iraq harder to govern and less reliable for large caravans.
Rival Mongol factions fought for control after the Ilkhanate’s collapse, including major battles in 1336. Continued instability threatened the safety of roads and the consistency of customs regimes across borderlands. For Silk Road commerce, political fragmentation often encouraged merchants to favor routes with stronger enforcement or to rely more on maritime alternatives when feasible.
During the siege of the Genoese port of Caffa in Crimea, plague struck armies and the city, and the wider outbreak spread through interconnected trade and travel networks. Black Sea ports were key junctions between steppe routes and Mediterranean shipping, so disruption there quickly affected long-distance commerce. The epidemic reduced labor, lowered demand in some areas, and raised risk for merchants moving across Eurasian routes.
Timur’s armies captured and sacked Aleppo and then struck Damascus, causing major destruction in two critical commercial hubs. These cities mattered because they connected caravan traffic from Iran and Iraq to Mediterranean markets and were central to tax collection. The attacks interrupted trade flows and forced a period of rebuilding before commerce could fully recover.
After the damage from Timur’s invasion, economic activity in Syria and the eastern Mediterranean gradually revived during the first half of the 15th century. Aleppo and Damascus again benefited from east–west commerce, including textiles moving between Iran, the Levant, and Europe. This rebound shows how commercial networks could recover when political conditions stabilized and merchants regained confidence.
The Ottoman army defeated the Mamluks at Marj Dabiq near Aleppo, leading quickly to Ottoman control over Syria. Control of Syria mattered for Silk Road commerce because it included major caravan cities, customs posts, and routes to Mediterranean ports. The change in rulers shifted taxation and security arrangements for merchants operating between Anatolia, Syria, and Egypt.
Ottoman forces captured Cairo, and the Mamluk Sultanate was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. This outcome closed the long era in which Ilkhanid–Mamluk rivalry (and its aftermath) shaped competition over the Silk Road’s western endpoints. Under Ottoman rule, the political map of the eastern Mediterranean and its trade regulation became more centralized than in the late Mamluk period.
